Dawes Announce Nothing Is Wrong (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

Los Angeles folk-rock band Dawes are celebrating the ten-year anniversary of their second album Nothing Is Wrong with a special deluxe edition of the record, due out August 20. The new reissue will be available digitally and on special edition vinyl featuring two-colored LPs in a gold foil jacket, with enhanced artwork and photos. The deluxe edition comes with four bonus B-sides from the original recording session – “Strangers Getting Stranger,” “All My Failures,” “Rest Easy,” and “Don’t Send Me Away.” The vinyl will include an exclusive 7-inch featuring two of the tracks and a digital download of all four songs.

Listen to the single debut of “Strangers Getting Stranger” and pre-order Nothing Is Wrong (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) here.

Nothing Is Wrong followed Dawes’ 2009 debut North Hills, the album that introduced and endeared the band’s rootsy brand of California rock-and-roll to critics and fans across the country. For their second full-length, the band – singer/guitarist Taylor Goldsmith, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, keyboardist Tay Strathairn, and bassist Wylie Gelber – returned to Jonathan Wilson, the renowned producer who helmed North Hills and has collaborated with everyone from Erykah Badu to Graham Nash. Nothing Is Wrong additionally featured Jackson Browne, singing on “Fire Away,” and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers founding member Benmont Tench on organ on three tracks. Taylor Goldsmith looks back on Nothing Is Wrong:

“The songs themselves were coming straight out of my life at the time. No one was safe. If I shared a particularly lively conversation with someone or even a more intimate encounter, it was all immediately fair game. My parameters for discretion were not quite established yet. It took me a second too long to realize how voyeuristic being a writer could be. I still needed to figure out how to add a layer or two to emotion, how to express myself without putting all my cards on the table at every opportunity. But maybe that’s what being 25 is all about. All the rest would come later. I’m just glad it’s all there for us to reach back into on any given night. Each record has been a turning point and something of a growth spurt, but maybe none as pivotal as Nothing Is Wrong was for us. That was the moment where we could see ourselves turning from hopeful upstarts into lifers. Glad it’s still worth talking about 10 years later.”

Amyl and the Sniffers Announce New Album ‘Comfort To Me’

Amyl and the Sniffers, the Melbourne, Australia rock band fronted by Amy Taylor, will release their second album Comfort To Me on September 10. Comfort To Me is the follow-up to the band’s 2019 self-titled debut album, which won acclaim for its “pure, uncut rock’n’roll fun”(Pitchfork) and its modern update on ‘70s punk – “spiky, wild, provocative, and a little dangerous with a fierce live reputation” (The Fader). Pre-order on deluxe “Melt Edition” vinyl includes a band-created zine, exclusive alternate artwork, and tri-color vinyl – limited to 2k copies.

Taylor and her bandmates – guitarist Dec Martens, bassist Gus Romer, and drummer Bryce Wilson – wrote Comfort To Me during the pandemic while quarantining in the same house together, spending more time refining the songs than they had previously. “The nihilistic, live in the moment, positivity and panel beater rock-meets-shed show punk was still there, but it was better,” says Taylor. “The whole thing was less spontaneous and more darkly considered.”

“The amount of time and thought I put into the lyrics for this album is completely different from the EPs, and even the first record,” she continues.“Half of the lyrics were written during the Australian bushfire season, when we were already wearing masks to protect ourselves from the smoke in the air. And then when the pandemic hit, our options were the same as everyone: go find a day job and work in intense conditions or sit at home and drown in introspection. I fell into the latter category. I had all this energy inside of me and nowhere to put it, because I couldn’t perform, and it had a hectic effect on my brain. My brain evolved and warped and my way of thinking about the world completely changed.

Having to deal with a lot of authority during 2020 and realising my lack of power made me feel both more self destructive and more self disciplined, more nihilistic and more depressed and more resentful, which ultimately fuelled me with a kind of relentless motivation. I became a temporary monster. I partied more, but I also exercised heaps, read books and ate veggies. I was like an egg going into boiling water when this started, gooey and weak but with a hard surface. I came out even harder. I’m still soft on the inside, but in a different way.”

Today the band shares Comfort To Me’s pummeling first single “Guided by Angels” alongside a video directed by John Angus Stewart- watch below.

SOJA Announces First Album In 4 Years

SOJA, the internationally acclaimed, two-time GRAMMY-nominated eight-piece from Washington D.C., will release their highly anticipated new album, Beauty In The Silence – their first in four years – on September 24 (pre-order available now). Listen to their new single “Press Rewind” ft. Collie Buddz and J Boog, which instantly sets the album’s mood of soulful celebration; a track that first took form late one night on Buddz’ tour bus and is a gloriously radiant tribute to how music enlightens and sustains us. “When we first fell in love with this band, we were kids,” says frontman Jacob Hemphill. “We worked our other jobs. In a band, if you’re lucky, music eventually becomes your real job. While that’s amazing, if you’re not careful, it becomes more ‘job’ than ‘awesome.’ That’s when you gotta press rewind and remember why you fell in love, and why you’re still in love, with music. I was on Buddz’ bus after a show we did, and he was playing beats he made. He’s a dope producer. He got to this riddim and I freaked out and said ‘wait, dude pause it.’ He paused it for like 30 seconds and I wrote the hook, then he started it over and I sang it. It was on after that.”

Fueled by the sheer force of the band’s connection and chemistry, Beauty in the Silence makes for a much-needed antidote to fractured times, infusing so much warmth and wisdom and unstoppable joy into each and every track. Like 2014’s acclaimed Amid the Noise and Haste (a GRAMMYnominee for Best Reggae Album), the title to Beauty in the Silence references the opening lines of Max Ehrmann’s beloved poem “Desiderata”: Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. “My dad had that poem memorized, and before I’d go out on tour he’d sort of whisper it in my ear,” said Hemphill. “To me it’s a reminder of what we lose when we get caught up in the distractions all around us. You get so used to life being loud and fast and goal-oriented, but then you go out in nature and hear the silence and realize, ‘Damn, I got tricked.’ Life doesn’t have to be all go, go, go. The real key to life is in being still.”

“I really love that this record is a mix of all of us together in a room and all of us far apart,” said Hemphill. “It’s something that I’d love to keep doing in the future: let’s get together, let’s get the vibe and the groove, and then let’s go off into our own worlds and discover what’s there.” SOJA deepens that communal spirit by collaborating with some of the biggest names from all corners of the reggae world including: UB40, Slightly Stoopid, Stick Figure, Dirty Heads, Rebelution, Common Kings, Mihali, Nanpa Básico, Eli Mac and more. And while each artist brings their own distinct sensibilities to the mix, all of the guest musicians are deeply aligned with the band’s mission of uplifting the masses.

Chicano Batman Release New Songs and 7″ Alongside Music Video

Chicano Batman release two brand-new tracks today, single “Dark Star” and its psychedelic B-side “Pastel Sunrise.” The songs, which mark the LA band’s first new material since their universally acclaimed 2020 album Invisible People, were both produced by Grammy-nominated producer John Hill (Portugal. The Man, Santigold, M.I.A.).

Order the translucent sea blue and opaque custard yellow 7 inch vinyl bundle here.

“Dark Star” comes alongside an incredible video directed by Anders Ericsson.“I suggested Anders Ericsson to direct the ‘Dark Star’ music video after enjoying his surreal direction for a Deerhoof music video,” says the band’s guitarist/keyboardist Carlos Arévalo. “I liked the perceived subjective nature of his work and how the visuals could stand on their own without the music if it was taken away. His playful and beautifully strange style immediately compelled me to look him up on social media because I was convinced he should direct our next video. Thankfully, he was game and the results are a piece in which he summarizes as : ‘Everybody feels lonely, squished by the world. Always compromised by big forces above us. How/Where to connect with others? When to leave your silo?’”

The “Dark Star” video premieres today on The Fader, who wrote, “Chicano Batman’s sound — a blend of popular and niche tropes filtered through the lens of the Brazilian psyche-rock movement Tropicália — is nothing if not a loving and lively collage.”

Dylan LeBlanc Releases Pastimes EP Today

Today Muscle Shoals singer-songwriter Dylan LeBlanc releases his new EP Pastimes, a self-produced collection of covers of songs from Glen Campbell, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Buffalo Springfield, and JJ Cale that inspired him to create his own acclaimed alt-country sound. Pastimes is streaming everywhere now and will be released on orange-colored vinyl in November.

Stream Pastimes + Pre-Order Vinyl

LeBlanc has also shared a new visualizer for his cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California.”

“When I was 15 years old I got my first paying gig at a local coffee shop called Juri’s,” says LeBlanc. “I remembered this girl that sat behind me in class and I bonded over Led Zeppelin IV. I remember I had gotten a Led Zeppelin box set that year for Christmas, and her favorite song was ‘Going to California.’ I rushed home to learn that song for her and spent hours in my room at my grandmother’s house where I lived at the time so I could play it for her and impress her. This song will always hold a special place in my heart. I love this record and this era of music that I think will always remain untouchable forever and always.”

Each song was chosen for its deeply personal impact: JJ Cale’s “Sensitive Kind” takes LeBlanc back to the smoky dive bars his father would bring him along to as a child. Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California” brings him back to age 15, playing his first coffee shop gigs and learning the song to impress a girl. Buffalo Springfield’s “Expecting to Fly” reminds him of teenage joyrides, speeding through the country and listening to music to escape life’s harsh realities. He learned the art of storytelling through songs with the Rolling Stones’ haunting “Play With Fire” and Bob Dylan’s “Blind Willie McTell,” a track that he compares to reading a Southern Gothic Faulkner novel. And Glen Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind” is a song he remembers from his early childhood, when his grandfather, also a guitarist, would throw parties where friends would gather to drink and sing and forget their troubles.

Pachyman New Single “El Benson” Out Today

Pachyman, the one-man dub band of multi-instrumentalist Pachy García, releases a new single from his forthcoming album The Return of Pachyman today. “El Benson” comes via a Jaime Villa Ruiz-directed video shot on Kodak Super 8 film. The upcoming album is out everywhere August 13, pre-order available here.

Remezcla premiered the video today, writing, “’El Benson’ tips the scale towards the reggae territory, filtering chilled, trippy sounds through a vintage aesthetic that sends us to an instant mental vacation.”

García describes the track as, “a sun drenched sound for cruising the streets. Setting the vibe in a soulful way and giving it a jazzy edge while dubbing it out. Inspired by the ‘East Side Story’ compilations and the fascination of that sound in Los Angeles. I wrote this tune when my friend Benson Pagan was in LA rehearsing to go on tour with Ozuna. I wanted to write something that complemented his style of guitar playing. the end result being a completely unique style of reggae.”

Pachyman will play a hometown record-release show at LA’s Zebulon on August 13. He will make his NYC debut opening for four Black Pumas shows at Brooklyn Steel on September 13, 14, 15, and 16. Tickets for the Zebulon show will be available this Friday, June 18 here.

The Murlocs Release New Song and Video “Bittersweet Demons” from Upcoming Album

The Murlocs have released their third single, the title track of their upcoming album, Bittersweet Demons out June 25.

Pre-order the vinyl, in the “Blue-Eyed Runner” edition here.

The title track comes with a video dedicated to Keegan Walker, as described by the band’s singer, Ambrose: “Whilst we were on tour in America in 2019 one of my sweetest and dearest friends Keegan Walker passed away. His presence was unlike any other I have ever experienced. That kind of person that’s forever filling you up with joyous excitement. Someone that always took the time and effort to be in your life and support you through the thick and thin no matter what… Keegan was always there for his friends. A few days after the funeral I sat back down to play at the piano and the words started to come out and feel right.I reckon Keegan would’ve loved this song, he loved this kind of soppy stuff just cause he’s a softie just like me X”
