New J. Roddy Walston & The Business Album “Destroyers of the Soft Life” Out Now; Watch CONAN performance

J. Roddy Walston & The Business has melded engaging, melodic songwriting with sharp observations about American culture on Destroyers of the Soft Life, their new album out NOW.

Get it now on gleaming white vinyl or CD, and stream/download everywhere: http://smarturl.it/jroddydestroyers

Watch the band’s CONAN performance and read an exclusive interview with Noisey:

Produced by studio veteran Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Built To Spill, Father John Misty) and mixed by M. Allen Parker (Dan Auerbach, Sheryl Crow), Destroyers of the Soft Life began two years ago when Rod Walston (lead singer / guitarist / piano), Billy Gordon (guitar), Logan Davis (bass) and Steve Colmus (drums) purchased space in a Richmond, Virigina WWII era bomb shelter turned lumber yard. The foursome gutted and subsequently spent seven months transforming it into their own recording studio. As they put down roots Walston also became a father for the first time, inspiring lyrics that take an unflinching look at family dynamics and parental motivations.

“We had never been a band where we pretended that it’s 1965,” Walston said. “Loud rock and roll music has become less relevant because it’s just been on a loop,” he says. “If there was any rule on this record, it was, let’s be a part of music right now. I want to be part of living music in this moment.”

New Primus album ‘The Desaturating Seven’ Out Today; On Tour this Fall

“Strange-as-ever” – BrooklynVegan

“Appropriately garish” – SPIN

Deeply off-kilter” – Stereogum

“The masters of weirdness” – Loudwire

San Francisco rock legends Primus are pleased to release The Desaturating Seven, their first original studio album in six years, today via ATO Records. Described as “an ever-mutating epic filled with marching rhythms, jarring tempo shifts and a prog-funk groove (cleverly set in 7/8) that recalls early Eighties King Crimson” by Rolling Stone, it’s available now on rainbow splatter vinyl, CD, download or streaming – GET IT NOW.

Get the album at your local record store, and you’ll receive a “desaturated” poster. Colorize the poster (be creative!) and share with #desaturatingseven – the five best entries will win a Primus prize pack!

This is the first studio album of original material since 1995’s Tales From The Punchbowl with the classic Primus line-up of Les Claypool (vocals, bass), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim Alexander (drums). The Desaturating Seven is inspired by a 1970’s children’s book Claypool often read to his kids when they were growing up. The book tells a story of seven goblins – one representing each color of the rainbow – who simultaneously pull the color out of the world.

“Many years ago when my children were little kidlets scurrying around the place wreaking havoc and whatnot till it was time for bed and book time, my wife turned them on to a book called “The Rainbow Goblins” by Ul De Rico,” Claypool explained. “The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately and I thought, ‘this would make good fodder for a piece of music.’ The use of color and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony and deceit vs unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it’s about time someone brought ‘Goblin Rock’ back to the fold.”

Watch Les Claypool read the full ‘Rainbow Goblins’ storybook:

This fall their Ambushing the Storm Tour will feature a complete performance of the new record—a show with a set of Primus material and then “an entire set of Goblin Rock, with full production and fancy eye candy.” All upcoming tour dates are listed below.

The Bronx Release “Two Birds” Video, from “V” out 9/22

The Bronx released a new video for “Two Birds” from their forthcoming album V out 9/22 – pre-order now.
The video, directed by Steven Hanft, follows the band as they perform across the seedy, off the beaten path L.A. landscape, away from the typical Beverly Hills and Hollywood sights. The clip is populated with a variety of Hollywood sirens, oddballs and masked characters adding new flavor to a vintage, classic rock video.

The Bronx’s V was produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, FIDLAR), and follows the bands alter-ego’s 2014 album Mariachi El Bronx III.

Guitarist Joby Ford says of the album: “It has the angst and social commentary that has characterized us from the beginning, only now the angst is aimed at more than just superficial things and the social commentary is directed at more than just people who like different music than us.”

The band will hit the road on release date, circling the US in October. Check out dates below.

Mike Gordon’s “OGOGO” Out Now!

Mike Gordon’s new solo album OGOGO has arrived via Megaplum / ATO Records. Produced by GRAMMY© Award-winning engineer Shawn Everett (The War On Drugs, Weezer, Alabama Shakes), OGOGO was recorded earlier this year in Boston and Los Angeles, and features Mike’s regular touring band: Scott Murawski (guitar/vocals), Robert Walter (keyboards), John Morgan Kimock (drums), and Craig Myers (percussion).

BUY HERE

“It was clear right from the opening track, “Equilibrium,” the LP was more inspired by the pop world than the likes of Phish and The Allman Brothers Band. Gordon had been listening to a lot of pop music when he drove his 8-year-old daughter Tessa to school each morning and the influence of the contemporary hits he heard seeped into his new music. Everett made full use of the studio to layer multiple tracks to create each of the songs found on OGOGO, in some cases using a dozen tracks or more of the same instrument on one tune. The result is unlike anything Mike has put out in the past and the insanely catchy “Let’s Go” just may be the bassist’s first crossover hit.”  – Jambase

Gordon will celebrate the release of OGOGO with a North American headline tour that will kick off at the Georgia Theater in Athens, GA on September 22. The run will include shows at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto (September 30), the Metro in Chicago (October 6), and a two-night stand at the Boulder Theatre (October 13 + 14).

The Drive-By Truckers have released a new digital single for “What It Means” recorded live at this summers Newport Folk Festival. It was the highlight of a powerful, energized set – and a crowning moment in the past year of the bands life, touring behind the politically charged (and critically acclaimed) American BandPatterson Hood tells Rolling Stone: “When we recorded [the album] they hadn’t even had the first primary yet. We were writing about this dark time that I honestly thought was going to get better.” Read the whole piece here and stream or download the track now, or pre-order on limited edition 7″ backed with a brand new studio track”The Perilous Night”.

Listen to New Joseph ‘Stay Awake’ EP and see on tour this fall!

Joseph returns with a seven-track EP, Stay Awake, out today to stream or download at http://smarturl.it/joseph-stayawake. The collection includes three new songs – “All,” which opens the set, a demo of “50, 60, 80” and the closing track, “Stay Awake” – plus reimagined versions of two older songs and stunning covers of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and the Rolling Stones’ “Moonlight Mile.”

Natalie Schepman, who founded Joseph with her two sisters, Allison Closner and Meegan Closner, says,Stay Awake is a small collection of songs we put together to help ourselves deal with heaviness. It’s a bit of telling it like it is. It’s a bit of a ‘keep going.’”

NPR Music premiered Joseph’s glistening version of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” today – listen HERE.

“When we were recently reminded of Tears for Fears’ song ‘Everybody Wants to Rule The World,’ it hit us how pertinent it is today even though it was written in the 80’s. Today, maybe more than ever,” explains Natalie, who added a few lines after the bridge that especially speak to the times we live in:

“Make the most of freedom and pleasure.

All I know is take care of each other.

An open door, a seat at the table, there’s enough to go around.”

“In all honesty, it feels like the house is falling down around us, but the lyric ‘holding hands while the walls come tumbling down’ resounds in our minds,” says Natalie. “We hope that our music can be a force of togetherness when it seems like everything’s trying to divide us.”

The band recorded Stay Awake at Sound Emporium in Nashville. It was produced by longtime friend Andrew Stonestreet, who co-wrote several tracks on Joseph’s most recent album, I’m Alone, No You’re Not.

The band’s fall headline tour kicks off next week with a September 13 show at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. The run includes an evening at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY (September 15) and a concert at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre (October 13). Surprise Surprise. New King Gizzard Out Now!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard has surprise released their third album of 2017, Sketches of Brunswick East, a jazz and Tropicalia infused collaboration with Mild High Club.  The album is available now for digital download, and you can now pre-order it on high fidelity 180-gram black vinyl, limited edition cassette, or CD. All physical pre-orders placed through the ATO shop will receive a free Gizzard Gator sticker, and orders will arrive before the album is available in record stores or other third-party retailers.

Buy / Pre-Order Here

Sketches is a soothing balm of a record, a chance to get to know King Gizzard’s sunny, playful side. Where previous albums have slipped down sonic worm-holes to explore distant galaxies, this one is an examination of (and homage to) the Melbourne suburb in which King Gizzard write and record in their own studio, and from where they run their planet-spanning psychedelic operation.

“We’re always walking up and down the street all the time,” described lead singer Stu Mackenzie. “Going to get coffee, lugging amps, just constantly wandering Lygon Street and spending a lot of time looking out into the distance, seeing the terrain change as new apartment buildings are erected, watching the cranes build bigger cranes. In that respect, perhaps it represents greater changes that are happening in the wider world, and this is our attempt to find beauty within a place that we spend so much time.”

A knowing nod to Miles Davis’s Sketches of Spain, this album also sees the band further exploring a Tropicalia element their music only ever previously hinted at. The band’s various sketches about time and place were reworked and pieced together, akin to “sampling-culture, in which old ideas are reshaped and suddenly things make sense,” explained Mackenzie. “It was like we were continually jamming with ourselves.”

Sketches Of Brunswick East is the third of five projected albums to be released by King Gizzard in 2017. “We don’t expect everyone to like everything that we release, but I hope people can view these five records as one body of work,” says Stu of this grand creative undertaking. “They’ve been made at the same time, by the same people, in the same place, and they all overlap.”

The band has a final run of US tour dates in 2017, beginning on September 23 in Michigan and ending at Joshua Tree, CA’s psychedelic Desert Daze Music Festival in mid-October. All upcoming dates are listed below.

Lee Ann Womack Announces ATO Debut “The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone” out October 27

LEE ANN WOMACK DIGS DOWN TO HER TEXAS ROOTS ON ATO RECORDS DEBUT ’THE LONELY, THE LONESOME & THE GONE’ OUT OCTOBER 27

PRE-ORDER NOW

LISTEN TO NEW SONG “ALL THE TROUBLE” VIA NPR MUSIC

Lee Ann Womack, one of the most distinctive and decorated vocalists in modern music, will make her debut for ATO Records on October 27 with the release of ‘The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone,’ an album that mixes the country, soul, gospel and blues of her native East Texas, into an audacious, sharp-edged work of art.  Produced by Womack’s husband and fellow Texan Frank Liddell (fresh off a 2017 ACM Album of the Year win for Miranda Lambert’s ‘The Weight of These Wings’), and featuring songs mostly co-written by Womack, ‘The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone,’ is her most personal album to date, marking the culmination of a journey that began with her 2005 CMA Album of the Year ‘There’s More Where That Came From’ toward an authentic American music that celebrates her roots and adds to the canon.

Listen to new song “All The Trouble,” co-written by Womack and her band mates Adam Wright and Waylon Payne via NPR Music here.

‘The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone’ features fourteen new songs, recorded with Womack’s core band of top shelf musicians including bassist Glenn Worf, songwriters and guitarists Wright, Payne and Ethan Ballinger, and drummer Jerry Roe.  The album was mostly recorded at the legendary SugarHillStudios in Houston, TX.  Formerly known as Gold Star and open since 1941, SugarHill is one of the oldest continuously run studios in the country and home to seminal early recordings by many artists who had a formative influence on Womack, including George Jones, Willie Nelson and Lightnin’ Hopkins.  Among the album’s three cover songs, Womack recorded a haunting version of George Jones’ “Please Take the Devil Out of Me” standing on the same gold star linoleum floor where he cut the 1959 original.

“I wanted to get out of Nashville, and tap the deep music and vibe of East Texas,“ says Womack.  “I wanted to make sure this record had a lot of soul in it, because real country music has soul.  I wanted to remind people of that.”

‘The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone’ follows Womack’s acclaimed 2014 album ‘The Way I’m Livin’,’ which SPIN deemed “the best of her career” to date.  Highlights from that career include performances for presidents and other world leaders, duets partners ranging from George Strait to John Legend, a Grammy, five Academy of Country Music awards, and six Country Music Association awards including Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year, and two Singles of the Year.
