The Belle Brigade release video for “Ashes”

The video for “Ashes,” The Belle Brigade’s first single from their upcoming March 25 release, Just Because, premiered recently at Entertainment Weekly. The clip, which was directed by the Kolton Brothers, can be seen here.

“For this video we wanted more of a visual concept than a storyline, where the colors and the images create a feeling, rather than a story adding another emotional dimension to the song. We were excited by the idea of animation, but also wanted to be in it. The video by the Kolton Brothers is a great bridge between all these things,” says Ethan Gruska, who co-founded The Belle Brigade with his sister Barbara.

“We had a lot of fun, shooting every twisted facial expression we could make in front of the green screen,” recalls Barbara Gruska. “I think The Kolton Brothers spent seventeen hundred thousand hours editing and rendering it?  Is that right?  Yeah, that was the number. And we just got to reap the benefits!”

The Belle Brigade will be previewing songs from the new album Just Because during a February residency at The Echo in Los Angeles, CA, performing each Tuesday (February 4, 11, 18, 25). The L.A.-based siblings will be joined on stage by bassist Keith Karman, who has played with them previously, and John Wood (The Black Keys) on keyboards. Barbara and Ethan penned 10 songs for Just Because, writing some together and others independently. Recorded with engineer/co-producer Shawn Everett, the music is artfully arranged, with enticing melodies and pop harmonies, fueled by the interplay of driving rhythms between Barbara’s drums and Ethan’s guitars. Bram Inscore and Blake Mills, who also performed on The Belle Brigade’s debut, joined them in the studio and the band once again enlisted the legendary Bob Ludwig to master the album.

“Ashes” is available now on iTunes. The single is from The Belle Brigade’s new album, Just Because, which will be released on March 25 by ATO Records. Fans who pre-order the album on iTunes will instantly receive a download of “Ashes.”  Just Because can also be pre-ordered here.

Les Claypool’s “Four Foot Shack” Out Now

Purchase on iTunes / Amazon / Official Store

How “deconstructed” can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey?  That’s exactly what everyone’s favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects. But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things – as heard throughout the band’s debut recording, Four Foot Shack.

As evidenced by DDT’s live shows and debut, Les and Bryan mostly mix traditional tunes, popular covers, and readings of Primus classics (all of which are usually barely recognizable when compared to the original versions).  Case in point, the inclusion of “Battle of New Orleans,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “Man in the Box,” “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver,” and “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver” on DDT’s debut disc. “A lot of it is just stumbling across it,” explains Les about how a tune is selected to be twang-ified. “There are tons of songs that we’ve stumbled across, and these ones just happened to be the ones that stuck”  Les added, “The Twang project is me exploring a lot of stuff that I personally listen to…When all is said and done, it’s just a hell of a fun project for me right now.”

Jessica Lea Mayfield Joins ATO and Announces “Make My Head Sing”

We’re super excited to add Jessica Lea Mayfield to the ATO family!  Jessica’s new album Make My Head sing will be available everywhere on vinyl, CD, and digitally on April 15th.

On Friday, Rolling Stone officially announced Make My Head Sing.  Read it here or below.

New song ‘Oblivious’ combines country vocals and loud amps

By John Luerssen
January 31, 2014 7:00 AM ET
On “Oblivious,” Jessica Lea Mayfield’s echo-laden bluegrass vocals mesh with scorching electric guitar lines to render remarkable results. The innovative, genre-bending number premieres here ahead of Make My Head Sing . . . , which will be released on April 15th on ATO Records.

“My guitar amps were so loud when we recorded this that it made me feel nauseous,” Mayfield tells Rolling Stone of the track. The album was co-produced by Mayfield and her bassist, collaborator and husband Jesse Newport. With the follow-up to 2011’s acclaimed Tell Me – which was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and described here as “a disarming collision of stark country balladry, dynamic alternative rock and arty electronic pop” – Mayfield does just that.

Tracked at Nashville’s Club Roar Studio with drummer Matt Martin, the 10-song Make My Head Sing . . .  reflects the artist’s desire to simplify things. “Bands are so big these days – I wanted to get in the studio and make a rock record and hear real guitar tones and something heavy,” Mayfield says.

Details of Mayfield’s upcoming nationwide tour to support the album will be announced soon. Ahead of the LP’s release, she will make a one-off appearance supporting Tegan and Sara at Cleveland’s Masonic Auditorium on February 7th, followed by sets at SXSW in Austin in mid-March.

Pre-Order Majestico’s ‘When Kingdom Come’ Exclusively at the ATO Record Club

Majestico’s When Kingdom Come will be available on February 11th as a 12″ vinyl exclusively through The ATO Record Club Pre-Order Here.  You can also buy it digitally on March 4th.

Majestico was born from the breath of a new America, a land at the end of reason, where dogma meets God. At the beginning, he found himself living in a bungalow behind the local zoo. Amid the sounds of monkeys and elephants, he began recording what would be his first record “Boundary Conditions”. It was released into that great void they call the Inter-Net and although it remains undiscovered by the outside world, it was received with much excitement among peers.

Majestico then moved to Little Biv Town and made a bed in the studio there. Attempts were made at new recordings but the project was plagued with technical problems, personal disputes, and money was scarce. But late that summer, there was a breakthrough. A show was planned to be held in the studio so Majestico gathered a band to perform. That night people poured into the room as a cloud of steam formed above. While he played, they danced. This was all new to him, and although recording had been stunted, a new vision was realized. He just wanted to rock.

Marked by this new freedom, Majestico continued to write songs and play everywhere that was cool- bars, clubs, houses, warehouses…wherever. This brought him to the doorstep of producer Andrija Tokic and Bomb Shelter Studios, where his friends the Alabama Shakes had recorded their album. This time, recording was a sinch. The music fell onto the tape and the album When Kingdom Come materialized. A new saga has been formed in Nashville, Tennessee and the future has no bounds.

Editor’s Note: Majestico is currently surfing your airwaves. He’s cruising a tram ride on the milky-way highway searching for the key to life, He’s totally cool, laid back, and humble. He doesn’t believe in slaughtering wheat or vegetables just to eat them. That’s wrong, but if you disagree he respects your opinion because freedom is the price we pay to get to blow stuff up with hand grenades and bazookas.

J. Roddy and Shovels & Rope play “Boys Can Never Tell”

J. Roddy Walston headed down south to Shovels & Rope’s backyard in Charleston, SC where they created this beautiful video of “Boys Can Never Tell”, from Essential Tremors. Rolling Stone premiered the video earlier this week, you can read more about it HERE.

Unlike Les Claypool’s work with Primus, his new project with old buddy Brian Kehoe, Duo de Twang, focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things – as is heard throughout the band’s debut recording Four Foot Shack, to be released via ATO Records on February 4th.

“This record represents what I personally listen to these days,” Claypool told Rolling Stone. “Guys like Johnny Horton, Jerry Reed and Vernon Dalhart are the soundscape of my world as I’m boiling up crab in the backyard or working on my old Chryslers, so the notion of ‘twangifying’ my tunes seemed like a damn good idea.” As evidenced by DDT’s live shows and debut, Les and Bryan mostly mix traditional tunes, popular covers, and readings of Primus classics (all of which are usually barely recognizable when compared to the original versions).
