SPIN Debuts Duo De Twang’s “Man in the Box”

Alice in Chains’ “Man in the Box” is a staple of ‘90s hard rock that no musician has dared try to genre bend – until now. Featured on the upcoming album Four Foot Shack, Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang has created a rootsy, banjo-filled rendition of the track that completely turns the original version on its head. Upon listening to Four Foot Shack you’ll quickly discover that Les and Bryan made it a point to keep things as live-sounding as humanly possible. “It was very live,” admits Les. “In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background. Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it.”

ATO Releasing ‘Bob Dylan in the 80’s: Volume One’, Preorder Now

ATO is pleased to be able to share the official announcement, via Rolling Stone,  of Bob Dylan In The 80s: Volume One with all of you. The album will be released March 25th, but you can preorder the album HERE.

 

The brainchild of producers Jesse Lauter (Elvis Perkins, The Low Anthem) and Sean O’Brien (Dawes, PAPA), the mission of Bob Dylan In The 80s: Volume One is to shed new light on a large cache of Bob Dylan songs that have long gone ignored, covering the period starting with 1980’s Saved and ending with 1990’s Under The Red Sky (including unreleased material — the “80s Basement Tapes” — and The Traveling Wilburys). Album contributors include: Built To Spill, Aaron Freeman of Ween & Slash, Glen Hansard, Reggie Watts, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Lucius, Langhorne Slim, Craig Finn Of The Hold Steady, Deer Tick, Dawn Landes, Blitzen Trapper, Carl Broemel Of My Morning Jacket, Elvis Perkins and more.

J. Roddy Walston & The Business Announce Spring Tour with Foals and Cage The Elephant

Best known for their live shows, we are thrilled to announce J. Roddy Walston & The Business’s upcoming string of tour dates, including a spring run with Foals and Cage the Elephant set to begin April 21st.

 

Melting all manner of stereotypes into an as-yet-unnamed breed of New American, each of J. Roddy Walston & The Business’s live performances finds hipsters hugging Teamsters and sweating till it hurts, and art-school cynics and metalheads screaming out every lyric in some gorgeously desperate attempt to connect. There seems to be a competition between the band and the crowd as to who will give more each night.

 

In addition to their epic performances, the band’s relentless rock single “Heavy Bells” has been charting at alternative radio for five months with a peak position of #12 this week. It has also spent five consecutive months on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and is not letting up any time soon. Rodrigo Y Gabriela To Release New Studio Album “9 Dead Alive” April 29

ATO Records is excited to announce the April 29 release of acoustic rock maestros Rodrigo y Gabriela’s new studio album. Titled 9 Dead Alive, it is the band’s first record of new material in five years. It was recorded and produced by Rod and Gab at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. Mixing was handled by Andrew Scheps (Black Sabbath, Adele, Metallica, Lana Del Rey) in Los Angeles.

 

 

9 Dead Alive sees Rodrigo y Gabriela playing face to face, guitar versus guitar, bursting with melodic energy and rhythmic invention. Recorded at their Pacific Coast hideaway in late summer, the album captures the warmth and spontaneity of two great musicians locked in together; perfectly distilled into nine new songs teeming with desire, elegance and gusto.

 

Each of the songs on the album is a personal celebration of individuals who have passed on, but through their deeds and words still resonate in the 21st century. Going as far back as Eleanor of Acquitaine (1122 – 1204) all the way through history to include Viktor Frankl (1905 – 1997), this diverse and fascinating list will strike a chord with anyone familiar with the duo’s passion for human rights, literature, history and philosophy. Rodrigo y Gabriela’s last album of all new music was 2009’s 11:11. Since then they have collaborated on the soundtracks to both Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Shores and Puss N’ Boots and visited Havana to record 2011’s Area 52 album with a Cuban orchestra. They have continued to tour the world, playing sold-out shows last year at the Hollywood Bowl and Red Rocks in Colorado.

The video, directed by Joshua Shoemaker and featuring members of Louisiana outfit the Deslondes, offers a tour of the community of St. Roch, which served as the inspiration for the song. Pre-Order Mike Gordon’s “Overstep” & Stream New Single

“Yarmouth Road” is one of 11 songs that Gordon wrote with guitarist and longtime collaborator Scott Murawski for Overstep, which will be released on February 25 by Megaplum/ATO Records. The infectious, reggae-inspired number is already familiar to Phish fans having debuted – along with “Say Something” – on the band’s 2013 summer tour.

The single is available now on iTunes and will be available at all other digital retailers beginning January 21. The album pre-order launches today on iTunes. Gordon and Murawski penned the songs for Overstep during a series of writing retreats in New England. When he was ready to record, Gordon – for the first time in his solo career – decided to turn over the producing reins, enlisting Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies). He also invited a few new players into the studio, including legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple).

Overstep is a diverse yet tightly knit collection of songs. Filled with juxtapositions and surprises, the music is grounded but sophisticated, and raw but carefully considered. Distant industrial noise gradually gives way to lush guitars and welcoming vocal harmonies in album opener “Ether,” which is streaming here. “Jumping” is a rhythmic puzzle box, detailing a series of thoughts that take place in a fleeting 1.5 seconds while “Tiny Little World” opens with a polite reverie about a fetching woman in a coffee shop, but morphs quickly into pulsing boogie as the narrator is carried away by desire and bravado. Overstep is Gordon’s fourth solo album, following 2003’s Inside In, 2008’s The Green Sparrow and 2010’s Moss. Gordon is a founding member of Phish, which wrapped up 2013 with a sold-out, four-night stand at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. He has also performed with numerous other artists and released two albums with Leo Kottke.

Rolling Stone Debuts New Drive-By Truckers Song “Pauline Hawkins”

Hurray for the Riff Raff premiere “End of the Line”

Recently called one of the best live bands around by the Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard in Rolling Stone, Hurray for the Riff Raff just added new headlining shows to their 2014 tour, which kicks off with an APAP Showcase at NYC’s Highline Ballroom on Jan. 9 and dates with Shovels & Rope. Hurray for the Riff Raff’s new dates include two more shows in NYC (4/2 at Knitting Factory, 4/3 at Lincoln Center), plus shows in Philadelphia, DC, Boston, Seattle, and more (full schedule below).

 

Garden & Gun just premiered Hurray’s new song “End of the Line” and the album cover of their ATO Records debut ‘Small Town Heroes’ (out Feb 11), now available for preorder. The band’s pre-order includes pink vinyl, limited-edition prints of the album cover, and silkscreened valentines from Hurray’s Alynda Lee Segarra. The New Orleans group also announced they are confirmed to be featured in Episode 4 of the final season of HBO’s ‘Treme’, the third time their music will appear on the show.
