Mike Gordon’s ‘Overstep’ Out Now!

Overstep, Mike Gordon‘s new solo album, is out today. The bassist/vocalist is celebrating its release with a special in-store acoustic performance/album signing at Newbury Comics’ flagship store in his hometown of Boston tonight and a month-long North American tour that kicks off this Friday, February 28 with a sold-out show at the Westcott Theatre in Syracuse, NY. Gordon will be bringing along his band – Scott Murawski (guitar), Craig Myers (percussion), Tom Cleary (keyboards) and Todd Isler (drums) – plus plenty of synesthetic mad scientist gadgetry to enhance the live experience.

Purchase Overstep on iTunes / Amazon / Official Store

Gordon penned Overstep’s 11 songs with guitarist and longtime collaborator Scott Murawski during a series of writing retreats in New England. For the first time in his solo career, Mike brought in an outside producer – Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Morphine) – to help realize his vision for the songs. Legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple) was among the guests joining them in the studio.

Associated Press called Overstep Gordon’s “most accessible solo record yet” and RollingStone.com praised first single “Yarmouth Road” as an “endearing, reggae-steeped groove about an emotional rift.” The song’s journey from idea to finished work illustrates the roles that serendipity, art and environment play in Gordon’s creative process. He and Murawksi were on their final retreat in Boston, working on a song about a robot living in a geodesic dome when they realized that there was a deeper idea within the song that needed to be teased out.

There’s a certain point where the song tells you what it wants. Then it needs to be cultivated,” explains Gordon. “Yarmouth Road” – the song within the initial song – was coaxed out by an evening walk through a repurposed oil distillery that was displaying honeycomb-laced ceiling sculptures.

Every so often a new voice engages basic questions in subtle, exciting new ways. Alynda Lee Segarra, the 27-year-old guiding light of the New Orleans-based band Hurray For The Riff Raff, is this year’s champion.” – NPR Music

“Segarra’s supple, intimate vocals are about more than conjuring a musical past – she wants to shape the future, too.” – Rolling Stone

Produced by Segarra and engineered by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), ‘Small Town Heroes’ features twelve new, original songs all written or co-written by Segarra, with support from a vivid cast of Crescent City musicians including her longtime right-hand-man on fiddle, Yosi Perlstein, keyboard player Casey McAllister, and two members of the Deslondes: Sam Doores on guitar and Dan Cutler on bass.

Old 97’s Join ATO, Releasing ‘Most Messed Up’

We are very happy to announce the addition of Old 97’s to the ATO family! On April 29th, the band will release their new album and ATO debut, ‘Most Messed Up’ – a revealing, 12-track meditation on 20 years in music that finds them at their raucous, boozy best. It’s “a rock opera, a way-off Broadway musical about a musician’s life, loves and lubrication,” says music critic Bill Flanagan. Recorded in Austin and produced by Salim Nourallah, ‘Most Messed Up’ also features guest appearances by Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N’ Roses) and Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case) on lap-steel.

Titles like “Wasted,” “Intervention,” “Wheels Off,” “Let’s Get Drunk & Get It On,” and “Most Messed Up” hint at the kind of narrators frontman Rhett Miller likes to inhabit – men who possess an appetite for indulgence and won’t let a few bad decisions get in the way of a good story. The magic in Miller’s songwriting lies in the depth that he lends his characters. Upon closer inspection, the hard partying and endless pursuit of a good time often reveals itself to be a Band-Aid covering up deeper wounds and emotional scars. “There’s a lot of darkness hidden in this record,” Miller explains.

The Old 97′s emerged from Dallas twenty years ago at the forefront of a musical movement blending rootsy, country-influenced songwriting with punk rock energy. ‘Most Messed Up’ follows their recent two-volume set, ‘The Grand Theatre,’ which found the band as “lifers writing for keeps,” according to Rolling Stone, and their 2013 EP featuring Waylon Jennings, ‘Old 97′s & Waylon Jennings.’

‘Most Messed Up’ Tracklist:
1. “Longer Than You’ve Been Alive”
2. “Give It Time”
3. “Let’s Get Drunk & Get It On”
4. “This Is The Ballad”
5. “Wheels Off”
6. “Nashville”
7. “Wasted”
8. “Guadalajara”
9. “The Disconnect”
10. “The Ex Of All You See”
11. “Intervention”
12. “Most Messed Up”

Hurray for the Riff Raff ‘Small Town Heroes’ Listening Parties

To celebrate Hurray for the Riff Raff’s highly anticipated album Small Town Heroes on February 11, ATO Records and Small Batch America are hosting release parties across the country at independent record stores with the “small town heroes” of the independent food and drink communities across the country.

The events will allow people to listen to the new record at the shop while sampling local indie food and drink makers curated by Small Batch America. Stores include Music Millennium in Portland, Grimey’s New & Preloved Music in Nashville, Waterloo Records in Austin, Rough Trade Records in Brooklyn and Euclid Records in New Orleans where the band will be performing live. The shops will be hosting giveaways of limited edition fine art prints with the Small Town Heroes album art, pink vinyl, silk-screened valentines signed by lead singer Alynda Lee Segarra, show tickets and more!

Small Batch America, an organization providing information and opportunities to the burgeoning independent food and drink community, curated over three-dozen local makers to take part in these unique events – some making something of a debut at the events like Rocks & Gravel Coffee (Brooklyn) and Eli Mason cocktail syrups (Nashville). SBA founder Tom Monday says of the events, “People go to independent record shops in search of music that’s new, interesting, and authentic – like Small Town Heroes – so this is an awesome opportunity to introduce them to indie food and drink makers that fit that description, too.”

Kyle Buckley of Brooklyn-based Grady’s Cold Brew says, “We’re looking forward to hearing some awesome music and serving up our coffee – when the opportunity came up of course we wanted to be involved.”

“We’re excited to be including some of our favorite small-batch products in these cool events for Hurray for the Riff Raff. When Small Batch America came to us with the opportunity, saying yes was a no brainer!” says Erin Zimmer of Good Eggs, a local food delivery service participating in the Brooklyn and New Orleans events.

Small Town Heroes has been named “already one of the best records of 2014,” by Esquire, NPR, SPIN, Slate and CMT. Segarra has been called the “voice of a generation,” by Billboard, Offbeat and Wall Street Journal, while NPR calls her “the voice of the future.”
