Benjamin Booker’s new album ‘Witness’ is out now! Watch live sessions

Benjamin Booker‘s new album Witness is out now – stream it everywhere, or get the album on vinyl, CD, or digital. The follow-up to his critically acclaimed self-titled debut, Witness is “

an urgent synthesis of blues, gospel and soul … with a raw and unforgiving candor that’s reminiscent of downtown New York punk.”

Read the album review via NPR First Listen, which notes that on Witness, “Booker leans especially hard into the vintage soul-rock, gospel and blues that have underpinned his work from the start, folding R&B string arrangements and gospel piano into his guitar’s gritty rampage.”

Previously, Benjamin Booker shared the track “Believe” with an accompanying live session video and interview via TIME check it out now.

Head to Mic to watch two new Benjamin Booker session videos for “Witness” and “Right On You”, recorded live at Providence’s Columbus Theatre with album producer Sam Cohen on guitar and several of the musicians who played on the album. Mic praises Booker’s music as “an urgent synthesis of blues, gospel and soul … with a raw and unforgiving candor that’s reminiscent of downtown New York punk.”

Download the studio versions of both tracks when you pre-order Witness, out June 2: http://smarturl.it/witness-preorder

Listen to “Right On You” via The FADER
, which calls it “a staticky, high-tempo ballad that packs a punch”. Download “Right On You” instantly when you pre-order Witness.

Previously, Booker shared the title track ‘Witness’ featuring a guest vocal by Mavis Staples. Pre-order the new album “Witness” and instantly download the title track, or stream it now via Spotify or Apple Music: http://smarturl.it/witness-preorder

“The New Orleans-based songwriter — who’s favored a sound like the blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll mixed with gasoline and a lit cigarette — leans into more explicitly gospel territory here, letting his strepitous guitar take a backseat to an upright-piano melody and choral harmonies.”

On ‘Witness,’ Booker has created his most ambitious work yet by digging deep into his passion for eccentric soul, R&B, and blues – drawing on everything from William Onyeabor’s 70s African psych-rock to Freddie Gibbs and Pusha T, while never straying too far from the garage-punk intensity that made his self-titled 2014 debut such a creative breakthrough. The album’s ten new, original tracks were all written by Booker, produced by Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby), and mixed by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes).

‘Witness’ tracklist:
1. Right On You
2. Motivation
3. Witness (feat. Mavis Staples)
4. The Slow Drag Under
5. Truth Is Heavy
6. Believe
7. Overtime
8. Off The Ground
9. Carry
10. All Was Well

Read the NPR First Listen review of Nick Hakim’s debut album Green Twins HERE. Watch the psychedelic animated video for the newest track off of Nick Hakim’s debut album Green Twins, out May 19, via Pitchfork, which calls the song “a soul delight”.

Nick Hakim said of the track, “This song’s first verse is about a night when I got really stoned at my friend’s house and forgot to meet up with my partner. It was pouring rain outside and when I realized I was late, I biked through Bed Stuy as fast as I could through the rain to find her but she was gone… the second verse is about patching it up, not leaving her house for a couple days. It’s a love song.”

Watch the official video and ATO Session for “Bet She Looks Like You”:

“An abstract but powerful experience” – Pigeons & Planes

“A hazy, deeply felt bit of modern soul” – Stereogum

“A smoky love ballad that is textbook Hakim: a bone-bare slow-wind of a song that doesn’t beg for one’s attention so much as it intoxicates the senses with knowing assurance. It’s a heartbreaker, for sure” – The FADER

Watch the live session for “Green Twins”, filmed live from Brooklyn’s Market Hotel:

“A soulful dive into one of Hakim’s signature psychedelic soundscapes.” – Stereogum

“The siren-like psychedelic jam is rich with layers and movement” – Saint Heron

“The unadorned, impassioned core of soul, seeped into unorthodox production influences and techniques. Together, it amounts to a sound all Hakim’s own, a look inside his head that gets into your own instead.” – Noisey

“Hakim’s sounds are deep and soulful, but touches of jarring reverb and eerie synths throw his work into a uniquely beautiful state of unbalance.”Washington Post

“A truly futuristic slice of R&B” – Uncut

Nick and his band stopped in Austin during SXSW where they played several showcases. Hakim filmed a pared down version of his song “The Want” from Green Twins as part of NPR Music’s South X Lullaby series. Watch the performance here and see Nick live on tour (see tour dates below):

King Gizzard Announces New Album ‘Murder of the Universe’ out June 23rd. Watch 360 Degree Live Performance

Melbourne’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are a once-in-a-generation group playing a heady combination of psychedelia, prog rock, freakbeat, jazz, heavy metal and Krautrock at a breathless punk pace. Today they introduce Murder of the Universe, to be released June 23rd via ATO Records. A concept album to end all concepts, Murder Of The Universe is a face-melting musical assault concerned with the downfall of man and the death of the planet.

Pre-order Murder of the Universe on Vomit Splatter or 180-gram Black Smoke vinyl from the official store, and receive a free album art megaposter

Lit by thunderclaps and lightning, MOTU inhabits a sonic landscape of death, decay, ossification, fossilization, rebirth. It is a place occupied by wandering shape-shifting beasts, bleeding skies, pools of blood, great fires and mushroom clouds; a planet rent asunder by conflict.  Like in the band’s frenzied live show, snippets of their breakthrough records I’m In Your Mind Fuzz and Nonagon Infinity resurface throughout this album to haunt their latest sound.

570d1834-9e6b-4b21-bab9-c88ec83ff6ce

“We’re living in dystopian times that are pretty scary and it’s hard not to reflect that in our music,” says front man Stu Mackenzie. “It’s almost unavoidable. Some scientists predict that the downfall of humanity is just as likely to come at the hands of Artificial Intelligence, as it is war or viruses or climate change. But these are fascinating times too. Human beings are visual creatures – vision is our primary instinct, and this is very much a visual, descriptive, bleak record. While the tone is definitely apocalyptic, it is not necessarily purely a mirror of the current state of humanity. It’s about new non-linear narratives.”

Watch Joseph performing “White Flag” on Ellen:

In a recent live review, the Philly Voice said, “With the precision of master harmonizers, the [sisters] delivered rich vocals one song after another to an adoring World Café Live crowd. Super catchy ‘SOS (Overboard)’ was eaten up to its candy core by everyone in attendance as were the rest of the audio confections they served up.” The band is touring in support of its new album, I’m Alone, No You’re Not, which spent two weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart and was voted as one of 2016’s top albums by NPR listeners.

“The members of Portland trio Joseph — sisters Natalie, Allison and Meegan Closner — blend their voices in the eerily close way that only siblings seem able to accomplish,” said NPR, praising their mix of “swoony delicacy and punchy anthems.” PAPER praised Joseph’s “dark folk-pop that will make you cry (in the best, most cathartic way possible).” BUST observed, “Joseph has certainly arrived, and this is one sister act whose talent will stand the test of time.”

Old 97’s New Album Out Now! + Music Vid Starring Fred Armisen & Jenna Fischer

With over twenty years and ten albums to their name, Texas alt-country stalwarts Old 97’s are excited to release their eleventh LP, Graveyard Whistling out todayThe album was recorded in the same Tornillo, Texas studio as their major label debut back in 1996, Too Far To Care.  “[Too Far To Care] is the sound that best defined us,” says Rhett Miller, the lead singer and primary songwriter. “It was a really magical time, and we go back to it a lot in our collective memory.” And so when it came time for the band—which still consists of the same four members: Miller, guitarist Ken Bethea, bassist Murry Hammond, and drummer Philip Peeples—to record their newest endeavor, producer Vance Powell brought up the idea of returning to Tornillo. “We knew instantly that it was the perfect move,” says Miller.

Just released!  New music video for “Good with God” starring the hilarious Fred Armisen and Jenna Fischer

While there are new collaborators on Graveyard Whistling, including Nicole Atkins and Butch Walker, there aren’t more than a handful of bands in history who can claim to have an intact, unchanged line-up as they approach twenty-five years together. There is, of course, no real blueprint or rulebook for sustaining the kind of chemistry that Miller, Bethea, Hammond, and Peeples enjoy.

“I think our longevity can be attributed primarily to our friendship and ability to overcome those moments when egos want to overtake and obliterate everything in their path,” says Miller. “We experienced the hype of the old business model, with all of its excess and idiocy, and also the deconstruction of that model and the advent of the new world, and been able to maintain a fundamental love for each other.

Chicano Batman came out of L.A., four young men in vintage formalwear, playing songs that blended Brazilian Tropicalía with early ’70s psychedelic soul and the romantic pop of bands like Los Ángeles Negros. It was an immediately addictive sonic brew, and their reputation grew fast. Now, they’re making their boldest statement yet with Freedom Is Free.

Freedom Is Free reflects Chicano Batman’s decision to foreground the soul and R&B elements of their sound. To achieve their ambitious sonic goals, the quartet worked with producer Leon Michels (El Michels Affair, The Arcs) in his Diamond Mine Recording studio in Long Island City, NY. Michels, a veteran in the New York soul scene, has performed in Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Black Keys and The Menahan Street Band. In addition to tracking the album to analog tape, Michels contributed keyboards and his trademark horn arrangements (he’s been sampled by Jay-Z and Ghostface Killah). The partnership between Michels and Chicano Batman truly captures the band’s live energy and brings their aesthetic goals to life.

King Gizzard’s Flying Microtonal Banana is Out Now! Stream FULL live show via Pitchfork

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are the most exciting head-spinning, third-eye opening, double-drumming goddamn rock ‘n’ roll band on the planet.

Following the frazzled freakbeat of 2016’s Nonagon Infinity, the endlessly inventive septet return in 2017 with new album Flying Microtonal Banana, their ninth studio album in five years, out now. Watch the band’s sold-out Webster Hall show via Pitchfork now:

Get Flying Microtonal Banana Now: Official Store | iTunes | Amazon

Flying Microtonal Banana marks another shift in sound as King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard drive deep into trance-inducing drones, inventive jazz flourishes, non-Western musical scales and metronomic rhythms that motor along like a well-oiled engine. So unique and evolved is the album’s sound that it necessitated a total reinvention of the band’s instruments after they began experimenting with a custom microtonal guitar made for frontman Stu Mackenzie.

Inspired by the movable frets of the Turkish bağlama, three cheap old guitars and a bass were customized in order to explore a new set of musical notes. A keyboard and mouth organ followed suit and so Flying Microtonal Banana was born.

Recorded in their own studio Brunswick East in Melbourne, the album also incorporates liberal use of the stirring tones of a Turkish horn called a zurna, as heard on the likes of ‘Billabong Valley’, the purple smoke-enshrouded, sub-Sabbath ‘Doom City’ and the moving musical miasma that is the album’s utterly transcendental title track. “The zurna’s notes are really malleable,” says Stu. “It’s a bendy, wobbly-sounding instrument, and blends perfectly with the secret notes on the guitar”.

After celebrating Flying Microtonal Banana’s release with a string of sold-out shows in Melbourne where they’ll be playing the album in full, King Gizzard will be headed back to North America! Check out the full tour schedule and get tickets below:
