Temples Announce Their New Sean Ono Lennon Produced Album, Exotico.

Temples have announced details of their fourth album, Exotico. The Sean Ono Lennon produced album will be released on ATO Records on Friday 14th April 2023.

Having previously worked with Lennon on their 2020 single ‘Paraphernalia’, the album was recorded at his upstate New York studio and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Beach House, Spoon, The Flaming Lips). The track listing of the 16-track album is as follows:

  1. Liquid Air
  2. Gamma Rays
  3. Exotico
  4. Sultry Air
  5. Cicada
  6. Oval Stones
  7. Slow Days
  8. Crystal Hall
  9. Head In The Clouds
  10. Giallo
  11. Inner Space
  12. Meet You Maker
  13. Time Is A Light
  14. Fading Actor
  15. Afterlife
  16. Movements Of Time

The album will be available on LP, CD, DL & cassette via the band’s shop and can be pre-ordered HERE.

The band have today also shared ‘Gamma Rays’, the first track to be taken from the album. Talking about the track, James Bagshaw of Temples said:

In the verse lyrics we’re talking about the grandness of nature, and then the chorus flips that on its head, it sounds like a rejoiceful summer tune about soaking up the rays, but the truth is that soaking up gamma rays will kill you. So it’s about that juxtaposition of beauty and danger that we often find in nature.

The track is also accompanied by a video shot in Benidorm. Talking about the video, director Molly Daniel said:

Filming in Benidorm was inspiring. It’s a very surreal and futuristic space – like Margate meets Vegas meets the end of the world!  I wanted a video that felt fast paced and took you on a journey through some great locations.

Having last played a sold-out U.K. tour in 2019, including a show at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire, the band make a live return next month with a short run of small club shows to road-test the new album. A full U.K. & European tour will be announced shortly. The full list of dates is as follows:

01.02.23 – Castle & Falcon – BIRMINGHAM

02.02.23 – YES – MANCHESTER

03.02.23 – Belgrave Music Hall – LEEDS

………………………………………

During the making of Exotico, Temples learned of the early-modern phenomenon of phantom islands: bodies of land included on maps for a period of time but later found to be nonexistent, often the consequence of oceanic mirage or deliberate mythmaking and the Kettering band’s fourth long-player takes place in a similarly mystical setting, an impossibly utopic island dreamed up by singer/guitarist James Bagshaw, bassist Tom Walmsley, keyboardist/guitarist Adam Smith, and drummer Rens Ottink.

With its resplendent collage of psychedelia and krautrock and time-bending dream-pop, Exotico brings that world to life in crystalline detail, all while exploring an entire spectrum of existential themes: impermanence, mortality, our connection with nature and the wild immensity of the mind. Equal parts cerebral and celestial, the result is a truly immersive body of work, fully affirming Temples as one of today’s most forward-thinking and endlessly inventive rock bands.

Having first crossed paths with Lennon at the Desert Daze festival in Southern California in 2019 they instantly felt a profound creative connection with the songwriter / musician/producer and their 12 days of Exotico sessions marked a significant departure from the self-contained approach they’d adhered to since their debut album Sun Structures (a 2014 release The Quietus likened to a series of “woozy daydreams that will embed themselves further in with each listen”). To that end, the band broadened their musical palette to include a vast expanse of instrumentation—a fitting choice for a body of work inspired by everything from classical symphonies to Italian horror soundtracks to Brill Building-era girl groups.

For Temples, the act of creating Exotico fulfilled both their hyper-imaginative impulses and an understandable need for escape from the real world. “This record is essentially something we made for ourselves to find joy in at the time we were making it,” says lead singer James Bagshaw. “There are songs to dance to, songs to reflect with, and through that we ended up delving into every aspect of our musical vocabulary.” Bassist Thomas Walmsley adds: “There are so many different influences across the songs, which goes back to having free rein in the studio and being as spontaneous as we could be.”

Because of that unmitigated freedom, Temples ultimately shook off any lingering inhibitions in the creative process. “We learned to see the magic in the mistakes, and in the unpredictability of an instrument or your own voice,” says Bagshaw. “It taught us to be less concerned about what genre something might sit in, or even stop worrying about genre altogether. The genre should always just be Temples.”

Altin Gün Are Back With Aşk

GRAMMY® Award-nominated Turkish psych-folk innovators Altin Gün have announced their eagerly anticipated new album, Aşk, arriving via ATO Records on Friday, March 31. Pre-orders are available now HERE.

An exuberant return to the 70s Anatolian folk-rock sound that characterized Altın Gün’s landmark first two albums, Aşk is heralded by today’s premiere of the pulse-pounding new single, “Rakıya Su Katamam,” available now at all DSPs and streaming services. A space rock- powered take on the folk standard composed by Turkish writer/theologian Mustafa Öztürk, the track is joined by an equally kaleidoscopic official music video premiering today at YouTube.

The band has also announced an extensive run of North American tour dates, which sees them performing at some of the biggest and most celebrated venues to date. See below for the full list of upcoming performances.

PRE-ORDER AŞK

Aşk sees Altın Gün veering away from the electronic, synth-drenched sound of their critically acclaimed 2021 albums, Âlem and Yol, to capture all the infectious power and urgency of the Amsterdam-based band’s famously propulsive live performances. Recorded using vintage equipment and techniques, the album’s ten groundbreaking tracks all represent visionary new readings of traditional Turkish folk tunes, revealing how these ancient songs remain eternally resonant and ripe for reinterpretation.

These songs have been covered so many times, always,” says vocalist/keyboardist Merve Dasdemir.

But not really in psychedelic pop versions,” adds bassist Jasper Verhulst. “It’s definitely connecting more with a live sound – almost like a live album. We, as a band, just going into a rehearsal space together and creating music together instead of demoing at home.

Rooted in antiquity yet blazing with contemporary relevance and vitality, Aşk also includes Altın Gün’s dazzling reinvention of “Lelim Ley,” a classic song of lost love and exile available now at all DSPs and streaming services. Recently named as “Today’s Top Tune” by the influential KCRW, “Lelim Ley” features music composed by renowned Turkish musician, author, poet, and politician Zülfü Livaneli and lyrics written by the late Turkish novelist, short-story writer, poet, and journalist Sabahattin Ali (1907–1948). Taken from Ali’s 1937 short story, “Ses,” “Lelim Ley” was joined by music composed by Livaneli in 1975 and has since been embraced as one of the most well-known and beloved songs among Turkish people everywhere.

LISTEN TO “LEYLIM LEY”

Hailing from Amsterdam but coming from various backgrounds (Turkish, Dutch and more), Altın Gün have captured the world’s imagination with their indelible fusion of psychedelic rock, deep funk, synthpop, cosmic reggae, and more with the rich and incredibly diverse traditions of Anatolian and Turkish folk music. The band captured the world’s attention with their 2018 debut, On, and quickly earned a prestigious GRAMMY® Award nomination for “Best World Album” with their 2019 sophomore LP, Gece.

Renowned for their dizzyingly hypnotic live performances, Altın Gün has spent much of this past year lighting up stages around the world, including sold out headline tours in North America, Europe, and the UK, along with show-stopping sets at such top international festivals as Indio, CA’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Netherlands’ Best Kept Secret, Barcelona, Spain’s Primavera Sound, and Reykjavik, Iceland’s Iceland Airwaves to name but a few. The band – who recently performed three historic collaborations with the Netherlands’ world famous Metropole Orkest – will embark on a wide ranging EU/UK headline run in March 2023, with North American tour dates – including headline shows and appearances at such upcoming festivals as Check, VA’s FloydFest (July 26-30) – to be announced soon.

Altın Gün is: Merve Dasdemir (vocals and keyboards), Erdinc Ecevit (vocals and keyboards), Thijs Elzinga (guitar), Jasper Verhulst (bass), Daniel Smienk (drums), Chris Bruining (percussion).

The deluxe album also features a reworked version of “midnight sun,” remixes of “midnight sun” from Sampha and King Krule, and Nilüfer’s cover of PJ Harvey’s “rid of me.”

PAINLESS has consistently been celebrated as one of 2022’s most outstanding albums. It has been ranked among the year’s best by NPR, The New York Times, Pitchfork, Vulture, The Ringer, Paste, Stereogum, Uproxx, AV Club, Consequence, Gorilla vs Bear and more. Nilüfer also recently performed six songs off the project in a “From The Basement” special, produced by Nigel Godrich.

The album features the stand-out tracks “anotherlife,” “stabilise” and the original version of “midnight sun,” which Nilüfer performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. With PAINLESS, Nilüfer runs head first into the depths of emotional vulnerability. The album was recorded between a basement studio in Stoke Newington and Riverfish Music in Penzance with collaborator and producer Will Archer, DEEK Recordings founder Bullion, Big Thief producer Andrew Sarlo, and musician Jazzi Bobbi. PAINLESS follows her renowned 2019 debut album Miss Universe and her 2021 EP Feeling Lucky?, which further explored Nilüfer’s fascination with ‘90s alt-rock melodies and drew on themes of resentment, her fear of flying, and the concept of luck.

Alabama Shakes’ Boys & Girls 10 Year Anniversary Deluxe Edition Released Today

Today, ATO Records released Boys & Girls 10 Year Anniversary Deluxe Edition, a two-disc collection of Alabama Shakes’ internationally acclaimed debut album. Repackaged in a foil-board gatefold jacket with new, unreleased photos and a bonus radio session, Boys & Girls 10 Year Anniversary Deluxe Edition is available HERE. See below for track listing.

“I can’t believe it has been 10 years since the release of Boys & Girls,” says singer/guitarist Brittany Howard. “At the time, we were just excited to be putting out music and playing shows. We had pretty much recorded the album in between our day jobs and had zero expectations. What followed completely blew our minds. This was such a magical period in all of our lives.”

In addition to the album’s original 11 songs, the deluxe edition offers 11 tracks from the band’s explosive live performance on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic.” Recorded in January 2012 during Alabama Shakes’ first trip to Los Angeles, the set included a performance of “Always Alright”a non-album track that appeared on the soundtrack for the Oscar-nominated film Silver Linings Playbook and received a GRAMMY® nomination.

Hailed as one of the best albums of 2012 by Rolling Stone and numerous other publications, Boys & Girls entered Billboard’s Independent Albums chart at No. 1. It went on to attain Platinum certification and earn the band multiple GRAMMY nominations. Lead single “Hold On” was voted the #1 Best Song of 2012 by Rolling Stone.

Alabama Shakes – comprising Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, and drummer Steve Johnson – recorded Boys & Girls at Bomb Shelter in Nashville. Soon after its release, the bandmates found themselves thrust into the global spotlight, achieving such milestones as performing at the White House and on “Saturday Night Live” along with winning widespread critical praise. Pitchfork lauded “Howard’s gale-force delivery, an instrument that could have blown Otis Redding back.” The New York Times’ Jon Pareles said, “Alabama Shakes sound raw-boned and proudly unprocessed.” NME hailed the band as “a genuine, word-of-mouth, go-see-them-then-tell-10-friends-how-amazing-they-are thing.” The Guardian observed, “their music, a deep earthy pit of blues and soul and swamp, is the sort of stuff that honeys the soul and puts fire in the loins.”

As the album’s legacy continues to grow – NPR included “Hold On” in the top five of its list of “The 200 Greatest Songs By 21st Century Women+” in 2018 – Boys & Girls remains a major cultural touchstone whose songs of survival, longing and irrepressible hope never lose their transcendent power.

Rodrigo y Gabriela Share Final Installment In 9 Mini-Video Series

GRAMMY® Award-winning guitar virtuosos Rodrigo y Gabriela have shared “Stage 1: Aware of Being Aware,” the final installment in a new cycle of nine deeply metaphysical mini videos streaming now at YouTube. Directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker/broadcaster Olallo Rubio, a complete compilation of all nine Stages clips premieres today at the duo’s official YouTube channel.

WATCH “STAGE 8: AWARE OF THE BODY”

WATCH “STAGE 9: AWARENESS”

“’The Stages’ represent the idea of our ever-lasting presence as awareness,” say Rodrigo y Gabriela, “as the only reality there is prior to the existence of our physical body, and any other object that forms what we know as our personalities; meaning, our thoughts, feelings, perceptions, memories, etc.

“We are not preaching or suggesting the way we seemingly experiment with life is the only way to liberate ourselves from unnecessary suffering, we just want to share our own experience based on the origins of “Advaita Vedanta,” or most commonly known these days as non-duality. This recognition of our true nature is where the path of no resistance meets the limitless, endless love and happiness we have always been.

“This nine-minute visual, brilliantly directed by Olallo Rubio, is the introduction for our new album, which will expand on the non-dual concept and the recognition of the ‘I’ prior to everything else. On the untouchable screen on which the movie of our apparent finite reality happens, who do you think we truly are? The screen or the movie?”

“As part of the creative feedback to shoot the collection, Rodrigo and Gabriela shared with me their thoughts around the spiritual concept of non-dualism,” says Olallo Rubio. “They gave me a lot of information related to the subject – essays, videos, etc. – and mentioned the four elements – Air, Water, Fire, Earth – as well as several abstract concepts. They also suggested it should be something timeless and not as focused on their guitar playing.

“I gave a lot of thought on how we could translate such complex philosophical and spiritual ideas to dynamic images which could match the quality and intensity of the music. I suggested we represent the interconnectedness, the non-existent difference between subject and object and the ‘illusion of the self,’ by introducing Rod and Gab as nameless, faceless characters who become one with the World/Universe through music. Considering the narrative cinematic perspective, we went from the internal and external toxic chaos of modern life to consciousness expansion and beyond. It became an audio-visual-musical interpretation of  the journey to reach full awareness.”

Each of the nine pieces excerpted on the “Stages” mini videos heralds a groundbreaking new full-length work from Rodrigo y Gabriela, with more music and robust international touring scheduled for 2023. Upcoming dates include a very special April 24, 2023, performance at London, UK’s Roundhouse as part of its In the Round Festival, the renowned annual festival that sees an eclectic mix of artists presenting intimate gigs in a fully seated, circular stage setting. For updates and ticket information, please visit www.rodgab.com/tour-dates.

This past summer saw Rodrigo y Gabriela follow last year’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated version of Metallica’s “The Struggle Within” with a two-track single featuring their ambitious cover version of the Radiohead classic, “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” alongside an exquisite new rendition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Symphony No. 25 In G Minor, K. 183, First Movement,” available now via ATO Records at all DSPs and streaming services. Recorded by Rodrigo y Gabriela in their studio in Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Mexico, both tracks are joined by official visualizers streaming now at YouTube.

CIVIC Release New Single – “Born In The Heat”

Melbourne-based five-piece CIVIC – Jim McCullough (vocals), Lewis Hodgson (guitar), Roland Hlavka (bass), Jackson Harry (guitar). Matt Blach (drums) – return today with a frenetic and driving new single “Born in the Heat”. The song is a frenzied blast of raw tension that captures the psychic unrest of feeling hopelessly detached from your own surroundings and circumstances. When asked about the single McCullough shares “‘Born in the Heat’ Is about resistance. It’s about being lead or distracted by something that seems alluring, only to find yourself trapped somewhere you don’t belong. There is a moment of defiance and a stand, then change. The born in the heat reference is just for fun really, an ode to being born in the Australian climate. It conveys good imagery.

“Born in the Heat” follow’s the November 2nd release of the “End of the Line” – the album’s lead single (watch the James Gorter directed music video HERE) – and is the latest from CIVIC’s visceral new full-length studio album Taken By Force – due out February 10th .  Recorded in the Castlemaine countryside at Harry’s father’s house, CIVIC enlisted Rob Younger of seminal Australian punk band Radio Birdman to produce and Mikey Young of Total Control and Eddy Current Suppression to mix and master the LP.

Taken By Force further cements CIVIC’s reputation as one of the most raw, energetic, and exciting bands to emerge from the Melbourne punk scene in years.

The Heavy Heavy Release Sublime Rendition of Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Guinnevere”

Today, with the release of new single “Guinnevere,” The Heavy Heavy continue a prolific ascent that has seen the Brighton, UK band make their late-night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, break the Top 5 at AAA radio, and wrap their first-ever, thirty-date headline US tour, all in the past month alone. On this sublime rendition of the Crosby, Stills & Nash classic, bandleaders Will Turner and Georgie Fuller reimagine “Guinnevere” through a mystical blend of hauntingly beautiful harmonies: soft then suddenly soaring, woven into a cosmic, whirling arrangement of dark and lush guitars. The band previously earned the support of both David Crosby and Stephen Stills on an impromptu, a cappella performance they shared of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Find The Cost of Freedom” this summer, and through “Guinnevere” they go a step further in celebrating some of the musical heroes who have inspired their time-warping, mind-bending strain of sun-soaked rock n roll.

Listen to “Guinnevere,” out now on ATO Records:

https://atorecords-ffm.com/guinnevere

“‘Guinnevere’ is our favourite David Crosby song,” says The Heavy Heavy. “It’s both haunting and beautiful. It has really interesting harmonies and the droning guitar is an atmosphere in and of itself. The song is totally unique, and we wanted to put our spin on it and get into that world.”

In addition to a recent cover of Father John Misty’s “Real Love Baby,” The Heavy Heavy’s take on “Guinnevere” arrives on the heels of their debut Life and Life Only EP. Since its release in June, the band has also ripped through performances for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and CBS Saturday Morning, shared stages with St. Paul & The Broken Bones, appeared in the trailer for Netflix’s next season of Outer Banks, and cemented their status as “one of the brightest new UK acts” (FLOOD). Perpetually inspired by the pursuit of making music that provides a rarefied pleasure, Turner and Fuller write songs “with that lick of madness that makes early Fleetwood Mac and peak Stones so thrilling” (The Guardian), a quality put on full display in standouts like Top 5 radio hit “Miles and Miles.”

After introducing sold-out audiences to their enthralling, unfettered energy this fall, The Heavy Heavy will return to the US in the spring of 2023. With brand new music in tow, the five-piece live band will headline dozens of dates, including NYC’s Brooklyn Made, LA’s Lodge Room, Chicago’s Lincoln Hall and Nashville’s Basement East, plus a stop at Innings Fest and much more. Find the full list of upcoming dates below, plus tickets on-sale now at theheavyheavy.com/tour.

Neal Francis Releases “Sentimental Garbage” EP

Acclaimed singer-songwriter-pianist Neal Francis has shared his new EP, Sentimental Garbage, available now via ATO Records at all DSPs and streaming services.

Sentimental Garbage – which follows last year’s breakthrough sophomore LP, In Plain Sight – collects a number of standout tracks recorded during the original album sessions at The Parsonage, Francis’s DIY studio at St. Peter’s Church in Chicago, IL. Highlights include the previously unheard “In Plain Sight,” available today for streaming and download.

A song of reconciliation and reckoning,” says Neal Francis of “In Plain Sight.” “The song takes account of how much I loved a past partner and acknowledges how I had hurt them. Also an examination of my tendencies and a contemplation of how technology is influencing my behavior.”Sentimental Garbage also includes such recently premiered tracks as the emotionally charged “Don’t Want You To Know,” the horn-blasted “Very Fine, Pts. 1 & 2,” and a hypnotic cover of Shuggie Otis’ classic, “Strawberry Letter 23,” all available now for streaming and download. The latter two tracks had their exclusive premiere via Rolling Stone Country, which wrote, “Francis’s rendition of ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ evokes the Seventies charm of the disco-tinged single — a Top 5 hit for the Brothers Johnson in 1977 — and dazzles with a psychedelic mid-song breakdown.”
“Sentimental Garbage was the working title of our last LP,” Francis says, “which includes the track of the same name. We ended up calling that record In Plain Sight while removing the title track from the sequence. I knew this was my last chance to slap Sentimental Garbage on a record jacket, the thought of which always brought me great joy. It also works because this record is compiled of bittersweet scraps. I guess we could have also titled the record Burnt Ends.”
Sentimental Garbage continues what has already proven a milestone 2022 for the Chicago, IL-based Francis, with highlights including a prestigious Americana Music Association Honors & Awards nomination (for “Emerging Act of the Year”), a benefit single with Wilco featuring a live collaboration on their classic “Theologians,” and debut live appearance on CBS Saturday Morning performing the In Plain Sight highlight, “Can’t Stop The Rain.”
Hailed by SPIN as “a mesmerizing performer,” Francis will mark the arrival of Sentimental Garbage with a wide-ranging international live schedule, including headline shows, festival appearances, and more. North American dates resume next month at Key West, FL’s COAST Is Clear Music & Arts Festival (December 1-4) and then travel through April 2023. The tour includes an eagerly awaited two-night homecoming stand at Chicago, IL’s historic Thalia Hall, set for March 24 and 25, 2023.
