“Yellow Eyes,” the new single from acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer Rayland Baxter, premiered today at NPR Music and can now be purchased at iTunes. You can pre-order his upcoming album Imaginary Man (Out Aug. 14) NOW.
Of the song, NPR Music’s Ann Powers praises, “Many musicians can craft about one-third of an excellent pop song. Some write beautiful bare melodies that drip into your head like honey into cake. Others are masters of tone, using genius arrangements and technical wizardry to craft a sound that transports, no matter the shape of the tune. Still others employ wit to craft characters that feel like friends. Rarely, a musician manages to do all three. On the new ‘Yellow Eyes,’ Rayland Baxter comes pretty darn close to such perfection.”
The song is from Baxter’s anticipated new full-length album, Imaginary Man, which will be released August 14 and is now available for pre-order.
Recorded in Nashville, the 11-track album was produced by Adam Landry (Deer Tick, Diamond Rugs) and Eric Masse (Andrew Combs, Robert Ellis) and features Bucky Baxter on pedal steel as well as Jessie Baylin, Isaaca Byrd (MYZICA), Mikky Ekko, Jordan Lehning (Caitlin Rose, Steelism) and Matt Vazquez (Delta Sprit) on background vocals.
Of the album, Baxter comments, “To me, Imaginary Man is an audible record of my journey down the bright blue river of imagination. It is a multicolored dream of song, a sonic birdbath if you may. The sounds and songs are as visual as they are tactile and it shows a bit more of who I have become as an artist, as continual and never ending as that process is.”
Imaginary Man follows Baxter’s highly praised debut feathers & fishHooks, which was released in 2012. Since then, Baxter has toured alongside Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Kacey Musgraves, The Head and the Heart, Shakey Graves, Boz Scaggs and Tedeschi Trucks Band, among many others. In celebration of the new album, Baxter will embark on a series of tour dates this summer and fall, including an appearance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. See below for more details. ‘The Firewatcher’s Daughter’ was recorded almost entirely as first takes without any demoing and little rehearsal before gathering at Bear Creek Studio in Washington State.
The result is immediate and electrifying. “The Eye,” a song influenced by Crosby, Stills and Nash, is so intimate and hushed you can hear the quiver of Brandi’s voice in a flawless 3-part harmony. Lead-off track and first single “Wherever Is Your Heart” captures a fiery intensity.
The creative spirit of the album is also exemplified in Brandi’s sold-out Pin Drop Tour, which wowed audiences this fall. Playing historic rooms, Brandi and The Twins performed songs new and old without any amplification – no mics, no amps, no PA – relying only on their voices, acoustic instruments and the venues themselves. The Chicago Tribune attributed Carlile to proving “that sometimes music has more to say than speakers can communicate.”
‘The Firewatcher’s Daughter’ follows 2012’s ‘Bear Creek,’ which debuted in the Billboard Top 10, was hailed as “gorgeous” by Rolling Stone and “tremendously assured” by NPR. Brandi has sold out venues like Red Rocks, back to back nights at The Beacon Theater and performed at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and more.

Formerly known as the Kopecky Family Band, the Nashville based group has had their music appear on a variety of hit television series including Grey’s Anatomy, Parenthood, The Vampire Diaries, and MTV’s Awkward to name a few. They’ve also toured all over the world and have played at some of the largest music festivals including Austin City Limits, Bumbershoot, and Lollapalooza. This year they will be performing at SXSW.
Their upcoming release, Drug for the Modern Age, explores such life-altering events as the sudden loss of a loved one, divorce, and struggles with addiction, along with more joyful happenings like new love and marriage. “The album was written in this weird time of so much pain but also happiness, and that really informed the writing and recording,” says vocalist/guitarist Gabe Simon, who co-founded the group with vocalist/keyboardist Kelsey Kopecky in 2007. “Our goal was to talk about all these very serious things we were dealing with, but in a way that felt nothing like wallowing and more like standing triumphantly, or even dancing our way through it.”
In achieving that dynamic, Kopecky (whose lineup also includes guitarist Steven Holmes, bassist Corey Oxendine, cellist Markus Midkiff, and drummer David Krohn) offer moments of symphonic grandeur alongside edgy, electronic-leaning innovation. Meanwhile, their daringly intimate lyrics both unsettle and engage, asking questions and encouraging reflection on the part of the listener.
As on their 2012 debut Kids Raising Kids, Kopecky teamed up with Konrad Snyder, but this time around the band took a more slowed-down and deliberate approach. This allowed them to bring new level of sophistication and soulfulness to their songcraft.
Drug for the Modern Age serves up its share of intricately layered love songs as well, revealing Kopecky’s endless grace in merging sweetness and melancholy. In its quietly devastating narrative of sex and heartbreak, “Closed Doors” is an epic breakup ballad built on dreamy guitar tones and sensually charged lyrics. A shimmering piece of dance-pop genius, “My Love” sheds light on the ephemeral nature of romance on the road. And with its gritty guitar riffs and bombastic drumbeats, “Quarterback” spins the slyly feel-good story of an underdog who misrepresents himself to get the girl before realizing that, as Gabe explains, “he can love as good as anyone else, and it doesn’t matter who he is.”
With the band forever bound by their shared passion for purposeful songwriting, all that revelation and sometimes-painful truth-telling ultimately fulfills something central to Kopecky’s mission: a deeper and stronger connection with each person listening.

“We took our time to write this record, and I’m really glad we did,” says Brittany Howard, lead singer and guitarist of Alabama Shakes, about the band’s new album Sound & Color. “We were able to sit down and think about what’s exciting to us, explore all the things we wanted to on our first album. This record is full of genre-bending songs – it’s even harder now when people ask, ‘What kind of band are you?’ I have no clue.
The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of “Shoegaze” or the garage-rock freakout on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini”. The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album with what Howard calls “more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going in,” then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight”. Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus.
