Dylan LeBlanc’s “Born Again” Premieres at BrooklynVegan

“A minor-key rocker, ‘Renegade’ would’ve dominated FM radio in 1982, back when Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers filled the airwaves with darkly-driven anthems.”

-ROLLING STONE

Dylan LeBlanc’s new song, “Born Again,” is premiering today at BrooklynVegan.

Of the song, LeBlanc comments, “This song came after days of feeling blocked and unable to think of anything to write about and I had the TV on in the background when I heard the words ‘born again.’ And even though that term is tied to religious meaning, I thought it was interesting and thought about my own experience of wanting to be different, tired of pain and how sometimes life literally beats you into a state of submission. It literally beats you down until you’re ‘born again,’ until some sort of accordance with the universe takes place, but how everything in your past leads you up to that point. It may happen several times in a person’s life, so I tried to pack all that in as few words as possible, which resulted in this song.”

“Born Again” comes from LeBlanc’s highly anticipated new album, Renegade, which will be released June 7  is now available for pre-order. Produced by Grammy Award winning Dave Cobb (Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton), the album features ten new songs and LeBlanc’s longtime band, The Pollies. Of the album LeBlanc says, “I wanted to write the same type of songs that matched the atmosphere the band and I were bringing live. So, I started with ‘Renegade,’ which was fitting since I felt myself going in a new, more intense direction with this record. In the studio, I let go almost absolutely and let Dave Cobb do his work. It was a different experience for me—how focused Cobb was and how quickly we would get live takes down. Mostly in one or two takes. Never more than three. It left me spinning at how quickly it all came together. Over the course of ten days Renegade was complete and ready for mastering. And I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.”

In celebration of the release, LeBlanc will embark on an extensive headline tour this summer, including shows at Atlanta’s The Earl, Los Angeles’ Troubadour, Brooklyn’s Rough Trade, Nashville’s Basement East, San Diego’s Casbah, London’s Omeara , Paris’s Les Etoiles and Berlin’s Privatclub among others. Black Pumas Announce National Tour + Debut Album, Out June 21st

Today, Black Pumas announce the release of their self-titled debut, out June 21st. Produced by Adrian Quesada  (Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, 2018’s Look At My Soul) in his home studio and colored by Eric Burton’s dark imagery and haunting vocals, the album is equally indebted to East Coast hip-hop as it is to classic funk and soul, resulting in a project that is of the moment rather than retro.

Following their ambitious slate of performances during last month’s SXSW, it’s clear that the collaboration between 27-year-old Burton and Grammy-winning guitarist/producer Quesada are due for a big 2019. Listen to their new single “Colors” below.

Quesada had been working on a new project inspired by a mix of woozy Ghostface Killah instrumentals, crispy Motown soul, and the introspective grandeur of dusty highway folk-rock, and, after hearing him audition over the phone, Burton slotted in beautifully. Pulling from his myriad performance backgrounds — singing in the church, acting in musical theater, and busking at the Santa Monica Pier — Burton injects Quesada’s instrumentals with a howling croon and surrealist lyrical bent. From the roiling, solar eclipse-inspired noir of “Black Moon Rising” to the ponderous yet epic “Oct 33,” these early collaborations provided the basis for Black Pumas.

Burton and Quesada were thrilled with the songs, but Black Pumas truly began to make their name with a weekly residency at Austin’s C-Boys that quickly became “the hottest party in town” (Austin-American Statesman), with lines wrapping to see their whip-sharp band and Burton’s “whirlwind of movement and gesture” (Chicago Tribune). What followed was a quick and dirty ascent through the Austin music scene, culminating in a coronation as Best New Band at the 2019 Austin Music Awards.

Listen to their 2019 Austin Music Awards Song Of The Year-winning debut single “Black Moon Rising,” deemed “psychedelic, funky, bold, cinematic, but above all, soulful and sincere” by KUTX above.

Black Pumas have also announced their debut New York show at the Knitting Factory for May 15th. Current tour dates below, keep an eye out for more tour news coming soon.

Mattiel Announces New Album Satis Factory + “Keep The Change” Video

Atlanta’s Mattiel have announced details of their second album, Satis Factory, out on June 14. The news comes with a punchy new song, “Keep The Change”, previously debuted during a rollicking performance for NBC’s Last Call last week. The song launches today with an impressive factory filmed video. Pre-order Satis Factory and download “Keep The Change” instantly here.

Says frontwoman Mattiel Brown, “The video was co-directed by Matthew Addington and myself. I had about four weeks to call him up, plan everything, find a location that would give us permission to film, source props. It was crazy, but a lot of fun. We brought in this amazing DP, Alan Sabir, from Calgary. He freehanded a lot of the performance shots and our script was pretty loose. This gigantic cement factory outside of Atlanta gave us free reign over the entire facility for two days – it kinda felt like running around inside a video game with all the tunnels, catwalks and passageways. And they had this amazing mint-green control room that hasn’t been changed since the early 60’s…It was a dream.

Co-produced by Randy Michael and Jonah Swilley and recorded in their native Atlanta, Satis Factory is the band’s second album. Having initially met in the Atlanta music scene in 2014, the process of recording Satis Factory was built upon the success of Swilley and Mattiel Brown’s time working together on their debut album. It’s a team that just works. “Jonah is a great songwriter and he’ll put a structure together and send it to me through an email, and then I’ll listen to it pretty much right away,” Mattiel explains. “And then we’ll restructure it if we need to and I’ll write a melody and lyrics to it and eventually record it.” Where the first record was confident, this second release is even more so. This is probably down to the chemistry between them; they seem in awe of each other. “Some of Mattiel’s best lyrical writing is effortless,” Jonah says. “She’s thoughtful with what she wants to say as an artist, but also understands pop sensibilities.”

Despite Satis Factory being recorded in exactly the same way, with exactly the same team behind their debut, the sound is noticeably different. Jonah explained that he “had a musical objective to try new sounds and ways of recording” to Mattiel’s first record but still “keeping lo-fi elements” to the new one. “We started working on Mattiel’s first record with a dusty, cinematic, and garage rock feel to the music,” he explains. “Satis Factory has more stylistic diversity with the musical compositions and an increased level of intensity.

Nilüfer Yanya Releases New Video for “Baby Blu”

Nilüfer Yanya has shared the brilliant video for her song “Baby Blu” , the latest single from her critically acclaimed debut record Miss Universe. Shot in Tokyo over New Years 2019, the video for “Baby Blu” is something of a family affair, starring Yanya, her sisters Molly and Elif, and brother Cemil.

In July, Yanya will head back to the U.S. for her first U.S. headlining tour, including a stop at NYC’s Music Hall Of Williamsburg – upgraded having instantly sold-out Rough Trade NYC the day tickets first went on sale – on July 23. Tickets for all U.S. dates are available HERE .
Already proclaimed Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record In The World’ , the instantly infectious ‘Baby Blu’ is a stand out track amongst an album packed with stellar singles and powerful songwriting. Explaining the video shoot, Yanya said : “We shot the video in Tokyo over New Years – me and my sisters went to visit my brother who is studying there for a year. My sister Molly had the idea for theming the video around street racing cars, which proved to be quite difficult to track down as it’s highly illegal in Japan. We managed to find a few car shows and garages, got some fast rides and had lots of fun. For me this video is really about us as siblings, refusing to let go of each other and our childhood.”

Lee Ann Womack Reinvents Tinseltown Romance For “Hollywood” Music Video

Today, Lee Ann Womack releases her latest video for “Hollywood” exclusively via Refinery29. Featuring custom-made dolls and intricate stop-motion animation, the video reinvents a story of Tinseltown heartache, set to this moody and mournful tune of faded love.

Director Chris Ullens (Rex Orange County, Fergie) paired footage of iconic California landmarks like the Hollywood sign, and wind farms at Golden Hour with the video’s custom-made dolls through hours of filming and editing.

The video follows a relationship riddled with doubt and uncertainty. Mainly set in a desert motel, it’s a shattered portrait of a couple staying together out of habit, but isolated in forlorn self-reflection. With no spark or attraction, they want their relationship unravel on the silver screen.

Lee Ann teased the video on her socials this week with a series of “Hollywood” movie posters featuring quotes from her friends Reba McEntire, Buddy Miller and Willie Nelson.

“Hollywood” is the second single from Womack’s ‘The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone’, which earned two 2019 GRAMMY nominations for Best Americana Album and Best Americana Roots Song for the album’s lead single “All the Trouble.” These were her eleventh and twelfth of Womack’s storied career, and her first as a songwriter. The album is a breathtaking hybrid of country, soul, gospel and blues, earning praise from NPR, The New York Times, Garden & Gun, Vice Noisey, Stereogum, Rolling Stone and the Wall Street Journal, who called it “remarkably strong, an album that’s bound to last.”

The “Hollywood” video will available to share on Saturday, April 20th at 9am EST.

Emily King Announces Fall Arena Tour Supporting Sara Bareilles

Fresh off headlining the opening night of Central Park’s iconic SummerStage on Saturday, Emily King was announced as support on Sara Bareilles’ Fall North American tour – the latest highlight in an amazing year for the vibrant R&B singer-songwriter. King and Bareilles are long-time friends and collaborators, most recently on Bareilles’ new track ” If I Can’t Have You“, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. Tickets for all dates are on-sale now and all upcoming tour dates can be seen below, including King’s upcoming Lollapalooza play this August.

In February of this year, King released her third album Scenery which debuted at #3 on the Billboard R&B chart and #6 on the Heatseekers’ chart. Scenery was praised by NPR, Pitchfork, and the New York Times and saw King performing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS Saturday Morning, and NPR’s Live From Here.

Take a look at King’s performance of “Can’t Hold Me” on Jimmy Kimmel.

It’s been said: if you want to change your mind state, change your scenery first.

For Emily King, the pop-soul singer from New York City who spent her first three decades living on the same downtown block, that notion was always easier said than done. A proud New Yorker, she loved her home, her family, her friends, and her life there. But when she finally resolved to challenge herself by moving out of her comfort zone, positive changes started taking shape immediately. In Upstate New York, the fresh air and fresh mentality gave her the proper space and perspective to create what would become the album of her career. Its name: Scenery.“For me, Scenery has themes of independence, confidence, and self-reliance throughout,” she says. “It’s about having a sense of freedom and self-worth, and taking a chance and having an adventure.”

King Gizzard’s ‘Fishing for Fishies’ Out Now – Signings in LA and NYC

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Fishing for Fishies

ORDER NOW

The fourteenth album since their 2012 debut – and their first following the release of five vastly different albums in 2017 – Fishing for Fishies is a blues-infused blast of sonic boogie that struts and shimmies through several moods and terrains. From the soft shuffle Outback country of the opening title track through the sunny easy listening of ‘The Bird Song’ (think the lysergically-soaked Laurel Canyon circa 1973) and on through the party funk of ‘Plastic Boogie’ (which somehow summons the spirit of Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions) the road-trucking, Doors-like highway rock of ‘The Cruel Millennial’ and ‘Real’s Not Real’ – it’s a dizzying, dazzling display which addresses a number of pertinent environmental issues along the way.

“We tried to make a blues record,” says frontman Stu Mackenzie. “A blues-boogie-shuffle-kinda-thing, but the songs kept fighting it – or maybe it was us fighting them. Ultimately though we let the songs guide us this time; we let them have their own personalities and forge their own path. Paths of light, paths of darkness. This is a collection of songs that went on wild journeys of transformation.”

Stu and Eric from King Gizzard will mark the release of the album with events in both LA & NYC.  Click the flyers below for full details.

The EP’s Second Track, “Corazon De Roca,” Is A Cover Of The Classic Bolero By Los Fresno

Chicano Batman has released a collaborative EP with Mexican alternative star Caloncho now available at DSPs. The first track is a brand-new song “Hablame” and the second track is a cover of the classic bolero “Corazón de Roca” by Los Fresno. The songs were recorded at the Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles. A portion of the EP’s proceeds are being donated to the KIND Organization – they provide legal counsel to children who migrate across the US/Mexico border alone.

The “Hablame” music video was inspired by the stories of unaccompanied minors who have made the journey from Central America to seek asylum in the US. The video was directed by Edgar Fernandez and animated by him and members of his animation department at East Los Angeles College. The band felt animation was the medium that would give them the most freedom to incorporate surrealist elements into their narrative, which is a story about survival, familial bond, and due process in the face of injustice.

The conversation about a collaboration between Caloncho and Chicano Batman started years ago sometime around 2013-2014,” Bardo Martinez explains. “He sent me an email about wanting to do something, we were stoked! The first idea that came to mind was to do a cover of a Mexican ballad from the 70’s. There’s this track by Los Fresno entitled “Corazon de Roca”. It’s kind of a song that you grow up listening to, especially in Mexico. What’s cool about it is that it’s a super typical Latin Bolero, but it has such a funky bass driven back beat.

Fast forward to 2017, Red Bull Mexico steps into the picture and provides the platform. In early 2018, we all meet. This time with the objective of writing an original song. We had a blast jamming as a unit! Caloncho became a fifth band member for a while. It was a lot of fun brainstorming lyrical ideas together and creating a song for his new born daughter. He was full of excitement and joy, and this feeling became the focal of the lyrical themes we put together. It’s a song about love and hope.”
