Fresh off the heels of two Grammy Award nominations, New York native and singer-songwriter Emily King delighted fans this morning, announcing a forthcoming release of 11 acoustically arranged songs from across her catalog, due out January 17 on Making Music Records / ATO Records. The to-be-titled collection of songs features highlights from 2011’s The Seven EP, 2016’s The Switch, and King’s acclaimed latest studio album Scenery. Today, King shares the acoustic version of her Grammy-nominated single “Look At Me Now.”

The album, produced by Jeremy Most and featuring string arrangements by Rob Moose, will be accompanied by a nationwide tour this January and February. King will be hitting U.S. cities coast to coast, including multiple dates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City, performing stripped-down versions of her songs. Emily King has been nominated for two 2020 Grammy Awards — Best R&B Song for her single “Look at Me Now” and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for her album Scenery and its engineers Tom Elmhirst, Ben Kane, and Jeremy Most and mastering engineer Bob Ludwig.

 

Scenery has been praised for its “starry-eyed earnestness” by NPR Music, while Pitchfork called its “sleek, vibrant R&B… the perfect frame for her extraordinary voice.” King spent 2019 taking her dynamic live show on the road, making high-profile TV appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS This Morning, performing at Coachella and Lollapalooza, and opening a massive arena tour with Sara Bareilles that included dates at Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl.

Black Pumas, the rising Austin duo of powerhouse vocalist Eric Burton and Grammy-winning producer and guitarist Adrian Quesada, have emerged as “the breakout band of 2019” (NPR) with the release of their self-titled album earlier this year, a debut that according to KCRW “radiates soul at a wattage that may not be exactly street legal.” Today, fresh off their nomination for Best New Artist at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards, they share the new music video for their hit single “Colors.” The cinematic clip — a powerfully intimate, Melanin-packed depiction of the joys and hardships of life colliding — was directed by Kristian Mercado, fresh off his Best Music Video win at this year’s SXSW Film Festival for Hurray for the Riff Raff’s “Pa’lante.”

 

“I really wanted to capture how powerful the sounds and vocals of Black Pumas are,” says Mercado. “I’m driven by emotion and felt a strong connection to the music. I was on a trip in Florida at Banana Records, when I heard ‘Colors’ playing. I was instantly moved and asked tons of questions about who they were. It was such a powerful song and experience that I sought out to do the music video for the song. We shot the whole film in the Bronx, wanted to show the Bronx as a place that was alive and vibrant. We wanted to celebrate family, connections, movement, and life. We explored the idea of the Bronx as a living garden, always growing always moving forward, and finding a cinematic landscape in places people often ignore. Eric and I spoke in great length about perspective and growing up, and how sometimes it’s a complicated experience, and we want to capture the feeling that is both beautiful and sometimes imperfect. We wanted to show both the joys and hardships of life colliding and expressing things in movement with images colliding together. Black Pumas are an extraordinary band and the visual needed to share the timeless quality of the song.”

 

“Colors” has racked up 14 million streams and been Shazamed 100K times, and the band’s incredible live video of the song went viral with over 8 million views to date. Last month, Black Pumas performed “Colors” on Jimmy Kimmel Live, following their network TV debut on CBS This Morning. Their performance of the track on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic was featured on NPR Music’s Favorite Sessions. “Colors” is currently at #18 on AAA Radio, the band’s highest charting single to date.

 

Black Pumas’ live show has been called “electrifying” by The Guardian, and following their Austin City Limits taping, the Austin American-Statesman raved, “To say Black Pumas is having a moment is like saying summer this year in Austin, Texas, has been pretty hot. Black Pumas is Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada. The band’s self-titled debut album was produced by Quesada in his Austin home studio and colored by Burton’s dark imagery and haunting vocals. It is equally indebted to East Coast hip-hop as it is to classic funk and soul, resulting in a project that is of the moment rather than retro. Quesada had been working on a new project inspired by a mix of woozy Ghostface Killah instrumentals, crispy Motown soul, and the introspective grandeur of dusty highway folk-rock, and, after hearing him audition over the phone, Burton slotted in beautifully. Pulling from his myriad performance backgrounds — singing in the church, acting in musical theater, and busking at the Santa Monica Pier — Burton injects Quesada’s instrumentals with a howling croon and surrealist lyrical bent.

“History Repeats” was the first single on the debut solo album from Brittany Howard, the frontwoman and guitarist for Alabama Shakes. Howard has become one of music’s most celebrated figures—the band has won four Grammys (out of its nine nominations), and she has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the main stage at Lollapalooza, where she sang with Paul McCartney at his invitation. For Emily King, the artist from New York City who spent her first three decades living on the same downtown block, that notion was always easier said than done. A proud New Yorker, she loved her home, her family, her friends, and her life there. The nomination puts an exclamation point on an already exciting year for the Amsterdam-based group, for whom 2019 saw a tour supporting Tame Impala, festival slots at Outside Lands, Pickathon, Desert Daze and more, as well as sell-out performances in Brooklyn, Seattle, Philadelphia and more. Self described as “a folk band who play traditional standards,” the six-piece reinterprets lesser-known Anatolian rock and folk songs.

Drive-By Truckers Announce New Album ‘The Unraveling’

Drive-By Truckers’ 12th studio album and first new LP in more than three years – the longest gap between new DBT albums – The Unraveling was recorded at the legendary Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis, TN by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price) and longtime DBT producer David Barbe. Co-founding singer/songwriter/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood both spent much of the time prior doing battle with deep pools of writer’s block. “How do you put these day to day things we’re all living through into the form of a song that we (much less anybody else) would ever want to listen to?” says Hood. “How do you write about the daily absurdities when you can’t even wrap your head around them in the first place? I think our response was to focus at the core emotional level. More heart and less cerebral perhaps.”

 

The songs that eventually emerged are among Drive-By Truckers’ most direct and pointedly provocative, tackling the myriad horrors of our new normal through sincere emotion and unbridled heart. Indeed, “Armageddon’s Back in Town” takes a whirlwind joyride through the whiplash of events we collectively deal with each day while the concluding “Awaiting Resurrection” dives headfirst into the despair and pain roiled up by these troubled times.

 

“The past three-and-a-half years were among the most tumultuous our country has ever seen,” says Hood, “and the duality between the generally positive state of affairs within our band while watching so many things we care about being decimated and destroyed all around us informed the writing of this album to the core.

 

“While a quick glance might imply that we’re picking up where 2016’s American Band album left off, the differences are as telling as the similarities. If the last one was a warning shot hinting at a coming storm, this one was written in the wreckage and aftermath. I’ve always said that all of our records are political but I’ve also said that ‘politics is personal’. With that in mind, this album is especially personal.”

 

The remarkable songcraft found on The Unraveling receives much of its musical muscle from the sheer strength of the current Drive-By Truckers line-up, with Hood and Cooley joined by bassist Matt Patton, keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Jay Gonzalez, and drummer Brad Morgan – together, the longest-lasting iteration in the band’s almost 25-year history. The LP also features a number of special guests, including The Shins’ Patti King, violinist/string arranger Kyleen King (Brandi Carlile), and North Mississippi All-Stars’ Cody Dickinson, who contributes electric washboard to the strikingly direct “Babies In Cages.”

 

Hailed by Stereogum as “perhaps the greatest extant American rock and roll band,” Drive-By Truckers will mark The Unraveling with an epic world tour, to be announced soon. In the meantime, the band is set for a series of upcoming live dates, including a two-night-stand at Englewood, CO’s Gothic Theatre (January 17-18) and the annual HeAthen’s Homecoming, a three-night extravaganza marking the 26th anniversary of Hood’s first visit to Athens, GA’s world famous 40 Watt Club (February 13-15). In addition, both Hood and Cooley will spend December traveling on solo concert tours.

Mattiel Release New Music Video “Millionaire” and Announces Tour

Lauded Atlanta band Mattiel have shared the video to “Millionaire”, taken from their much acclaimed second album, Satis Factory, which was released in June. The band have also revealed touring plans and will be making their first run of coast-to-coast American dates since Satis Factory’s release, kicking off in Houston, Texas on January 23rd and winding their way around the country, taking in Los Angeles, the West Coast, the South, the Midwest, Canada, New York City and the East Coast. Filmed at a Southern state fair, and directed by frontwoman Mattiel Brown, the “Millionaire” video documents the faces of the hardworking fairground ride operators, sidestall workers and bucking broncos as day turns to dusk and then into evening. Says Mattiel, “Besides the nostalgia factor from my childhood, I wanted to shoot the video at a state fair because there’s such an eerie juxtaposition between the bright lights and the actual people who run the cheap thrills. The need for instant gratification is a very American, western-world thing. No matter the mental or physical cost, entertainment is always readily available. But funny enough, inside this huge funfair of rides and games, a lot of the people I ran into didn’t look entertained at all.”

 

The song itself, a languid lament delivered in Nico-esque tones, was written, she explains, “about high expectations and empty promises. I suppose it serves as my own warning against complacency.  It’s also the song that inspired the title of the album.”

The last few months have been action packed for the band who first won international praise for their self titled Burger Records’ debut in 2017. Championed by Jack White – who took them out on arena shows around the US – they’re making their way back to the US with their brilliant album Satis Factory. Their dynamic live performances landed them their TV debut, first in the UK on the BBC’s prestigious Later…with Jools Holland and then on NBC’s Last Call in the U.S, before touring extensively in the UK Europe, on a run that included an impressive three sets – on three different stages – at this summer’s Glastonbury Festival. “Millionaire” follows previous impressive videos, “Keep The Change”, “Je Ne Me Connais Pas” and “Food For Thought”.

The band, anchored by the impressive talents of guitarist and co-songwriter Jonah Swilley, initially met in 2014 through the local music scene in Atlanta. Mattiel Brown, who had never fronted a band before and was working full time as a graphic designer, found the musical camaraderie and shared vision that she’d been seeking.The process of recording Satis Factory was built upon the success of Swilley and Mattiel’s time working together on their debut album. It’s a team that just works. “Jonah will put a structure together and send it to me through an email,” Mattiel explains. “And then we’ll restructure it if we need to and I’ll write a melody and lyrics to it and eventually record it.”

 

Where the first record was confident, Satis Factory is even more so. This is probably down to the chemistry between them; they seem in awe of each other. “Some of Mattiel’s best lyrical writing is effortless,” Jonah says. “She’s thoughtful with what she wants to say as an artist, but also understands pop sensibilities.”

Honey Harper Announces Debut Album “Starmaker”

Today, Honey Harper returns to announce his debut album, Starmaker, due March 6th via ATO Records.  Pre-orders are available now from the ATO Store.  Starmaker comes as a collection of contradictions in both subject matter and style. Written with his wife and writing partner Alana Pagnutti over the past three years, the album itself is primarily about the journey to create it. Its self-awareness is largely the result of Harper’s inner monologues about his fear of failure, desire for success, and the toll that journey has taken on him and his loved ones. It’s an attempt at honesty through the veil of a country singer lost in the stars.  After explorations in other vastly different styles, Harper recognized the value he could add to a genre with beautiful sounds but negative connotations. On Starmaker, Harper seeks to revitalize country music for people who don’t like country music.

 

 

The latest offering from the album, “In Light Of Us,” arrives with a fittingly tender video. Directed by Joshua Gary, the visual compiles VHS footage of Harper and his friends (including the director) from the ages of 15 through 21, the song an ode to them and the times they spent together. Harper says it best: “When I turned 18 I left home and moved to Decatur, GA with my best friends. ‘In Light of Us’ is a significant song for me as it represents that time; the light and dark psychedelic paths that led and inspired the beginning of my journey to Starmaker.” 

 

 

Starmaker also includes previous singles “Tomorrow Never Comes,” “Vaguely Satisfied,” and “Strawberry Lite,” the latter two are available to purchase on 7″ vinyl now. R&B singer-songwriter Allen Stone releases his latest album Building Balance today. Building Balance is rooted in a mix of genres from 70s D.C. go-go music and hip-hop to soul and funk. Temples Release Third Album “Hot Motion”

Beloved British band Temples’ highly anticipated third album, Hot Motion – is out today.  Renowned for their mesmerizing live performances, Temples  take to the road in support of Hot Motion with North American  touring in the fall and winter. The band arrives in the US in October for a first leg of dates which begins with a stop at Desert Daze in Lake Perris, California. (All tour dates below.)

 

 

With their third brilliantly crafted and ingeniously intricate album, Temples have found new ground and a deeper, darker creative well.  A glorious technicolor infuses much of the album but there is a David Lynch-ian undertone that adds a gravity to Hot Motion’s soaring moments. “It felt like there was a darker edge to what we were coming up with and we wanted to make sure that carried through the whole record,” said bassist Thomas Walmsley. “It’s not a ten track, relentless rock record from start to finish, it’s got a lot of light and shade and more tender moments, but that heavier, darker sound is something we wanted to explore further.”

 

Setting up their recording studio in an outbuilding of lead singer James Bagshaw’s house in the midlands of England, the space proved a factor in the gestation of the record. “We’ve gone from bedroom to living room to a dedicated space. We could all set up in the same room and allow things to play out a lot more like a band. That played a huge part in the sound of the record,” said Walmsley.

 

Lyrically too, this record has seen Temples embrace “purer, primal” feelings. “I’m really proud of “You’re Either On Something” lyrically,” admitted Bagshaw. “On that track, I can hear influences of stuff that I listened to when I was growing up. There’s almost a nostalgia to that track, even though it’s very forward-looking. Equally, while the words on [album closer] “Monuments” are a little cryptic, it’s very much about the time we live in. I wouldn’t say it’s a political song but you can’t help but write about the things that are happening.”

Rodrigo y Gabriela Release New Track “Gamma State” Only on Amazon Music

Today, Mexican acoustic rock guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela released a brand-new Amazon Original song, “Gamma State”, available only on Amazon Music. Originally a demo from the sessions for their most recent album, Mettavolution, the band returned to the studio to flesh out the song into an intense and exhilarating guitar-centric sprint. Amazon Music is releasing the track as a part of the newly launch playlist, La Guitarra, a new, global playlist spotlighting Latin guitar greats.

 

“The first sketches of this song started a couple of years ago, when we started writing for the new album. We road-tested it on tour in Australia last year and it went down well with our fans there. However, as we zoomed in on recording Mettavolution with Dave Sardy in Los Angeles, it became apparent that it didn’t quite sit with the rest of the songs on the record,” said Rodrigo Sanchez.  “So we are very happy that ‘Gamma State’ is now finally coming out into the world.”
