Mike Gordon to Release “Overstep” on Feb 25th, 2014

On February 25th, ATO will release Overstep, Phish bassist Mike Gordon’s fourth solo studio album.  On Overstep Gordon shared songwriting duties with guitarist and longtime collaborator Scott Murawski and handed over the producing reins for the first time in his solo career, enlisting Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies). He also invited a few new players into the studio, including legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple).

The result is a diverse but tightly knit family of sturdy rock numbers that manages to sound grounded but sophisticated at the same time, and raw but carefully considered. Overstep’s opening track “Ether,” which begins as distant industrial noise that’s gradually replaced by lush guitars and welcoming vocal harmonies, serves as an invitation to the listener to set aside current preoccupations and come along for a 49-minute “reality check.” Gordon draws inspiration from an astonishing variety of sources, from the natural world to the emotional world to his often persistent visions. Like Gordon himself, the album is full of contradictions, juxtapositions, and surprises – which is exactly what his fans expect. Pre-order details will be announced shortly.

Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang to Release “Four Foot Shack” on 2/4/14

Pre-Order now on iTunes or the Official Store

How “deconstructed” can a group get? How about just one vocal, one bass, one guitar, and a basic beat supplied by stomping on a mini-tambourine-doohickey? That’s exactly what everyone’s favorite storyteller/narrator, Les Claypool, is incorporating in his new band, Duo de Twang. While Les is still pulling double duty with the Primus lads, he has also found the time to unite with his old buddy, Bryan Kehoe, who fans will recognize from several past Claypool projects, and also as one of the main actors from Les’ hilarious jam band mockumentary, ‘Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.’ But unlike Primus, DDT focuses more on the Americana/rootsy side of things – as heard throughout the band’s debut recording Four Foot Shack, to be released via ATO Records on February 4th.

And as evidenced by DDT’s live shows and debut, Les and Bryan mostly mix traditional tunes, popular covers, and readings of Primus classics (all of which are usually barely recognizable when compared to the original versions). Case in point, the inclusion of “Battle of New Orleans,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “Man in the Box,” “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver,” and “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver” on DDT’s debut disc. “A lot of it is just stumbling across it,” explains Les about how a tune is selected to be twang-ified. “You’re twanging away, and then all of a sudden, something just comes out.  And then you laugh about it…or you don’t. And then you move on. There are tons of songs that we’ve stumbled across, and these ones just happened to be the ones that stuck.”

Upon hearing Four Foot Shack you’ll quickly discover that Les and Bryan made it a point to keep things as live-sounding as humanly possible. “It was very live,” admits Les. “In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background.  Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it.”

Les added, “The Twang project is me exploring a lot of stuff that I personally listen to; Johnny Horton, Vernon Dalhart, Jerry Reed, Bob Wills, Eddy Cochran stuff like that – it’s another door for me to open. I’m doing this sort of Luther Perkins, Johnny Cash guitar-ish type part on my bass, by doing the old ding-dinka-ding, dinka-ding-dinka-ding on a lot of the stuff. It took me a little bit to get that. Now that I’ve gotten it, I can pull songs out of the air and it’s surprising how many songs easily succumb to the twang, and can be complimented by the twang. When all is said and done, it’s just a hell of a fun project for me right now. I’ll do it ’til it’s not fun anymore.”

ATO Records joined forces with music supervisor Randall Poster to help to help curate and assemble Divided & United. “These songs are rendered in such a direct way that you think, ‘I understand what it felt like to be alive a hundred and fifty years ago,’” says Poster. Best-known for his work with director Wes Anderson on acclaimed feature films such as Moonrise Kingdom and Rushmore, as well as the HBO series Boardwalk Empire and recent compilations like Rave On Buddy Holly, Poster sees this project as nothing less than an emotional snapshot of one of our country’s most important historical moments. “You feel it. It’s so vivid. When I put these collections together, I assemble them like I do a movie soundtrack and feel like I’m telling a story. On this record, you get a sense of, ‘Oh my goodness, here’s the story of the Civil War.’”

Midlake’s New Album “Antiphon” Out Now!

Midlake’s new album Antiphon is out now!

The album is also currently streaming on NPR’s First Listen.  You can stream and read the article here

Antiphon is the 4th studio album for the Denton, TX based indie-rock veterans, and anyone who knows Midlake’s preceding albums will recognize some constituent parts of Antiphon: the quirky psychedelia of 2004 debut Bamnan and Slivercork, the ‘70s soft-rock strains of breakthrough album The Trials Of Van Occupanther and the Brit-folk infusion of 2010’s The Courage Of Others. But their fourth album is another fascinating departure, but also a logical progression.

Recorded at their studio in Denton, the self produced Antiphon came together in six months and was mixed by Tony Hoffer (Belle and Sebastian, M83, Beck). According to singer/guitarist Eric Pulido, “Antiphon is the most honest representation of the band as a whole, as opposed to one person’s vison that we were trying to facilitate.” “It’s always through the scope of Midlake,” said Pulido of the new record, “but on Antiphon we wanted to embrace the psychedelia, style and nuance you might hear in bands from yesteryear while also being aware of music influences leading up to and present now. The result was less folk and more rock. Less nostalgic and more progressive. Now the sky’s the limit.”

NPR recently claimed that “Midlake does grand the way Pink Floyd did”, while Stereogum called Antiphon “Stellar… warm and inviting”. The album was made available a week early as a special collector’s piece bootleg vinyl, with 500 limited edition, hand stamped, and hand numbered split-color vinyl available at indie retail stores across the country. Midlake will kick off their North American tour November 5th at Brighton Music Hall in Boston, and will be playing with Pearl Jam November 15th in Dallas and November 16th in Oklahoma City. For a full list of tour dates, including recently announced shows with The Flaming Lips on December 30th and 31st, check out the band’s website.
