Jim James Announces New Solo Album Uniform Clarity Out 10/5/18

Jim James has announced the release of Uniform Clarity, a new companion piece to his acclaimed 2018 album, Uniform Distortion.  The new LP comprises acoustic renditions of the songs originally found on Uniform Distortion and also includes two all new tracks.  Uniform Clarity was produced by Grammy-Award winner Shawn Everett and arrives on October 5th on white colored vinyl, CD, and digital download/streaming services.

Pre-orders are available here.

“The idea for UNIFORM CLARITY came from UNIFORM DISTORTION,” says James, “an album of intentional chaos/dirt: literal and figurative distortion of lyrics and sound meant to echo and hopefully shed some light on the twisted times and distortion of the truth in which we now live. UNIFORM CLARITY is meant to illuminate the other side – raw and real, but very clear, much like in the early days of recording where all you could hear was the truth because there were no ways to manipulate recordings in the studio. Working with Shawn Everett, we created a document style recording of these songs- just vocals, guitar and the space itself- no special FX. A crystal clear illustration of the flawed beauty of what a song starts off as or sometimes remains- a thought. a seed. a light from the womb of the universe brought to life down here on earth.”

Oh Pep! Shares New Single, “Your Nail and Your Hammer”

Melbourne, Australia’s Oh Pep! will release their sophomore album I Wasn’t Only Thinking About You… on October 26th via ATO Records. Today, NPR shares an advance stream of the album. “‘I Wasn’t Only Thinking About You…’ not only creates a rare space for nuance, but does so with artful, dance-worthy tracks,” says NPR.

“Their songs are smooth-running, precision-crafted melodic machines…”Rolling Stone

“Their pop sensibilities offer more twists and turns than the usual ‘verse/chorus’ formula, but there are still big, catchy hooks. It’s just that those hooks seem to happen after you’ve taken a journey through a story, so the hook sinks much deeper and offers a kind of emotional relief.” – NPR

“The duo’s humorous lyrics and off-beat instrumentation make for some very catchy tunes” – WXPN

“the independent music scene is currently booming in the Oceanic continent. Notable artists like Lorde, Flume, Courtney Barnett, etc. all call Australia and New Zealand their home, and Oh Pep! adds another name to the list.” – Paste

“Insidiously catchy. They make bubbling pop music with dramatic flourishes.” – Stereogum

“Indie-pop with the emphasis on “pop”: Their songs are smooth-running, precision-crafted melodic machines that just happen to be written and performed by two or three people instead of a factory.” – Rolling Stone

“This is pop at its most kinetic, propelled forward by a steady snare beat, the rhythmic scratch of strings, and the undeniable energy that exists between songwriters Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs.” – Consequence of Sound

Adam’s House Cat – Town Burned Down – Out Now!

In stores today is the long lost pre-Drive-By Truckers project Adam’s House Cat. Formed in the mid-80’s by Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, Adam’s House Cat toured the late 80’s indie-circuit and recorded one lone studio album before disbanding. The tapes were recently unearthed, remixed and mastered for the first time and paired with epic liner notes from Hood. The vinyl comes in a gatefold jacket, with an LP sized booked and is pressed on yellow vinyl.

“Deeply indebted to R.E.M. and the Replacements… sounds like a long-lost scrappy southern indie staple”Rolling Stone

“A vital installment in the Truckers remarkable catalogue”Uncut

“A delightfully grimey portrait of wanting to get the hell out of somewhere. Equal parts heady and twangy”Paste

“Rural, fast paced, speedy, beat-up songs that evoke the quintessence of the American rock’n’roll freeway”Classic Rock

Drive-By Truckers fans have been waiting for this, and it should hold them over until the new 2019 studio album.

Adam’s House Cat will open a few shows in Atlanta for the Truckers next week, and DBT, as they often do, will spend the rest of the year on the road…

Drive-By Truckers Finally Unveil “Lost” Adam’s House Cat Album

On September 21st, ATO is proud to release the “lost” album by Adam’s House Cat titled Town Burned Down. Formed in 1985 by Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, Adam’s House Cat appeared primed for success in the Our Band Could Be Your Life / pre-Nirvana-era of indie-rock. The tracks have a fierce Replacements-like edge to them, but Hood’s vocals and melodies are unmistakable, and this collection is a stunning preview of the songwriter he would eventually become. This lone album was recorded in 1990, but things fizzled out for the band shortly after as members moved away or got real jobs. Hood and Cooley stayed in touch, of course.

The master tapes were unearthed a few years ago and Hood decided to give them a full re-mix, he cleaned up the vocals and sent them to Sterling Sound for mastering. The resulting album sounds fantastic, and the package comes with short-story length liner notes from Patterson detailing the rise and fall of the band. The LP comes on yellow vinyl.

Pre-order the record here.

Rolling Stone premiered the track “Runaway Train” earlier today, one of the few Adam’s House Cat tracks that have become staples in the Drive-By Truckers live show.

Natalie Prass Covers Dionne Warwick for Spotify Singles + Shares New Video

Watch “The Fire” Video HERE

“One of 2018’s catchiest records” -Entertainment Weekly

“The sound of a musician hitting her stride” -Rolling Stone

“Fascinating… a call to arms… brilliant” -NPR

“Magnificent… fights oppression with optimism” -The Guardian

“A dazzling artist entering her prime” -Daily Mirror

NPR is sharing a powerful new video for Natalie Prass’ track “The Fire” today from her sophomore album The Future And The Past. Directed by Alex Germanotta, the video is “a statement on power dynamics between people in relationships and in society,” according to Prass. Shot in the remains of Presidents Park outside Richmond, Virginia – a now defunct open-air museum where visitors could walk among 43 presidential busts, each standing over 18 feet tall – the crumbling monument visually encapsulates the themes of Prass’ new album; her heartbreak over the 2016 presidential election and her newly born awareness that she could use her music to talk about social justice.

Prass’ Spotify Singles Session was released today as well, and includes a new version of her lead single “Short Court Style” and a cover of Dionne Warwick’s “Deja Vu”.

Prass will continue her breakout year by kicking off a headlining North America tour next week with support from Stella Donnelly, taking her through Los Angeles, Chicago and Nashville among numerous other stops. Following that run, she will head to Europe for a month-long jaunt. Early 2019 will see the musician supporting Kacey Musgraves on her “Oh, What A World” tour (all tour dates below).

The Future and the Past, out now on ATO Records, saw the rising star performing on Conan and CBS Saturday, as well as rave reviews from NPR, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, GQ, NY Mag and more. A deeply personal and political album, it is a powerful feminist statement that taps into women’s struggles for autonomy and equality, and resonates profoundly in this climate. Though the album was born out of a sense of deep disappointment, doubt and fear after the 2016 election, the result is a record that insists on faith and optimism, succeeding in assuring the listener that they can make a difference.
