ATO Welcomes Midlake / New Album Out Nov 5th

We couldn’t be happier to welcome the newest addition to the ATO family, Midlake, whose new studio album Antiphon will be released on November 5th.

An antiphon is a call-and-response style of singing, from Gregorian chants to sea shanties. In the case of Denton, Texas’ favorite sons Midlake, it’s the perfect title for a bold response to a new phase in the band’s illustrious career, with a re-jigged line-up and a newly honed sound as rich and symphonic as it is dynamic and kaleidoscopic.

Anyone who knows Midlake’s preceding albums will recognize some constituent parts of Antiphon: the quirky psychedelia of 2004 debut Bamnan and Slivercork, the ‘70s soft-rock strains of breakthrough album The Trials Of Van Occupanther and the Brit-folk infusion of 2010’s The Courage Of Others. But their fourth album is another fascinating departure, but also a logical progression. The sound is simultaneously familiar and changed.

“It’s always through the scope of Midlake,” says vocalist/guitarist Eric Pulido, “but on Antiphon we wanted to embrace the psychedelia, style and nuance you might hear in bands from yesteryear while also being aware of music influences leading up to and present now.  The result was less folk and more rock. Less nostalgic and more progressive. Now the sky’s the limit.”

This growth is down to the ambition and ability of Pulido (vocals, guitars, keyboards) Paul Alexander (bass, keyboards, bassoon, guitars, backing vocals), McKenzie Smith (drums, percussion) and Eric Nichelson (guitars, autoharp), plus Jesse Chandler (keyboards, piano, flute, backing vocals) and Joey McClellan (guitars, backing vocals) from Midlake’s last live incarnation. But it’s also down to the absence of Midlake’s former principal singer Tim Smith, who left the band in November 2012.

As Pulido explains, Midlake had finished touring in support of The Courage Of Others in November 2010. “We immediately returned to the studio, as we always did. With hindsight, that wasn’t a good thing to do.” The Courage Of Others had taken the best part of two years to make, and they found themselves struggling to achieve their aim.  Midlake tried recording at the farm in Buffalo,Texas where they’d had success with The Courage Of Others, “but we knew something was missing,” Pulido recalls. The band took a break to play a few concerts, “to try out new songs and keep ourselves out there. One show was Bella Union’s 15th anniversary at the End of the Road Festival, which we didn’t realize would be our last with Tim.”

After some time back in Denton, Smith announced his departure. In the fall-out over the spoils of what had been recorded, the remaining members decided to start afresh, and wrote and recorded Antiphon in six harmonious months – bar ‘Vale’, which had been demoed without Smith during one of the sessions.  With its ravishing, rippling textures symptomatic of Antiphon’s scale, ‘Vale’ showed how far they’d already come. The remaining nine tracks – the album is free-flowing in feel, concise in structure – confirm it’s very much Midlake, but uncannily rebooted, and relaxed.

The band had already validated their sublime instrumental mettle by backing John Grant on his award-winning 2010 solo debut Queen Of Denmark; now they had to step into new roles, collaborate on songwriting and have Pulido take over as frontman. He admits it wasn’t the easiest transition for any of the band but the experience was enormously freeing: “Antiphon is the most honest representation of the band as a whole, as opposed to one person’s vision that we were trying to facilitate.”

For example, ‘The Old And The Young’, a lighter, swinging version of the ‘new’ Midlake, has elements of “buoyancy” that Pulido says were long suppressed. “The chorus is catchy and has a lift, like we were releasing the dove! I love many genres of music – from Abba to Zappa, and I wanted to write in a way that wasn’t putting parameters around what it is we were creating. It was a more honest representation of who we really are.”

Gogol Bordello’s “Pura Vida Conspiracy” Out Now!

Internationally renowned gypsy punk rock group Gogol Bordello return with their sixth full-length album Pura Vida Conspiracy out now.  Produced by Andrew Scheps, the new album was recorded in El Paso, Texas at Sonic Ranch Studios and is a powerful collection of 12 surging new songs.

Purchase on iTunes | Amazon

The album’s title is derived from a Spanish slang phrase for “pure life,” which is a theme that resonates throughout the new material.  The disc’s opener, “We Rise Again,” introduces the album’s limitless, all-embracing themes instantly, centered on a chorus of “Borders are scars on face of the planet.” The new songs are infused with ideas rooted in Eastern philosophy but also search for a means of joining fragmented parts and persons, and of creating a worldwide consciousness.

“For me music is a way to explore human potential,” Hutz says. “And that’s my main interest in life – human potential. Everyone knows there’s something inside of us that we’re not using. How do we get it? How do we reach it?  Every single person knows that there’s something and nobody knows what it is. So at one point I said to myself, I’m gonna get down and get it.”

J. Roddy Walston & The Business Announce “ESSENTIAL TREMORS”

In close proximity to both an InnTown Suites and parking lot whiffle ball scrums there is Soil of the South music studio, tucked away unassumingly in the town of Valdosta, Georgia. Between meals of home cooked lasagna and restless nights on thin, spring-popped mattresses J. Roddy Walston & the Business was the first band ever to settle in there last March to record their new album. We are thrilled to announce Essential Tremors coming out on September 10th.

No stranger to the south, lead vocalist, guitarist and pianist J. Roddy Walston was brought up in the southern church hometown of Cleveland, Tennessee before relocating to Baltimore where he made the acquaintance of lead guitarist and vocalist Billy Gordon, bassist and vocalist Logan Davis and drummer Steve Colmus, now collectively known as The Business.

Essential Tremors, the band’s third release, is the most far-ranging and eclectic album in the band’s history. Their blend of classic rock & roll emphasized by rapturous hooks, riffs and rhythms, coupled with Motown flavor and funky charm brings out a pure Bacchanalian splendor. J. Roddy’s arresting voice and thumping piano playing travels directly from your eardrums to your bone marrow as he keens, croons and intones words and music that are at turns lunatic and mystic.  Their relentless touring and trademark spirited live performances has helped J. Roddy  Walston & The Business grow from a grass roots movement into a band with a loyal and expansive following.

Joined by born and bred Valdostan Mark Neill, the Grammy-winning producer and engineer of Black Keys’ Brothers and Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit), J. Roddy and co. manifested eleven immersive and relentless tracks that now comprise their third album Essential Tremors. From the explosive raw power of “Heavy Bells” to the hymnal reverberations of “Sweat Shock” to the contemplative, soulful call of “Boys Can Never Tell”, Essential Tremors demonstrates the band’s growth into becoming one of the forerunners in rock ‘n roll today.

Track listing:
1. Heavy Bells
2. Marigold
3. Take It As It Comes
4. Black Light
5. Sweat Shock
6. Nobody Knows
7. Hard Times
8. Boys Can Never Tell

Okkervil River Reveal Artwork & Launch Pre-Order for “The Silver Gymnasium”

PRE-ORDER THE SILVER GYMNASIUM

Okkervil River just released a new video previewing the packaging of ‘The Silver Gymnasium,’ which comes with a central gatefold map drawn by William Schaff, depicting Will Sheff’s childhood town of Meriden, NH, circa 1986, where his parents worked as teachers for a boarding school. The video intertwines images from the map with mid-1980s photographs of Will as a child.

Sheff conceived the album as a tribute to the spirit of pre-adolescence, meant to evoke the nostalgic feeling of, in his words “an action figure you found in the woods.”  The map is designed to look like one drawn from a child’s vision, and the printed version has a legend with numbers correlating specific places to each song on the album.

The pre-order is available in three bundles: ‘The Silver Gymnasium’ pre-order with a CD, cassette, or double LP, the ‘Silver Gymnasium’ t-shirt combo, featuring a t-shirt, a CD, cassette, or double LP, and ‘The Silver Gymnasium’ baseball t-short combo, featuring a CD, cassette, or double LP.

For a limited time all orders receive a free bonus disc featuring two non-album tracks.

ATO Welcomes Hurray for the Riff Raff

New Orleans, Louisiana’s Hurray for the Riff Raff has signed to ATO Records and will release their anticipated new studio album early 2014. Alynda lee Segarra signed the ATO contract in the basement of the The Bomb Shelter Studios in Nashville, TN where she and producer Andrija Tokicnfirst worked together on Hurray for the Riff Raff’s critically acclaimed album Look Out Mama. They set up a makeshift office so that she and her attorney, Pony the Dog, Esq., could look over the contract together.

Hurray for the Riff Raff is Alynda lee Segarra, a 26-year-old Puerto Rican from the Bronx. After leaving home at an early age to travel the country, she eventually settled in New Orleans where she began to perform and record with a revolving cast of musicians. Their last album Look Out Mama (2012) gained critical acclaim from the likes of Mojo, No Depression, American Songwriter and NPR who named it one of the best albums of 2012. American Songwriter says, “Those kinds of lines don’t come along often to songwriters, though they seem to come with ease to Segarra.”

Hurray for the Riff Raff is currently on tour with label mates Alabama Shakes and will be playing together at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, CA on July 17 and 18. They will be making their Newport Folk Festival debut later this month and on August 1 will be headlining at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, NY, followed by stops at the 30th Annual Roots of American Music at Lincoln Center Out of Doors in New York, NY on August 10 and the Kennedy Center on August 11. Okkervil River Reveal First Song from New Album “The Silver Gymnasium”

We’re excited to announce Okkervil River as the newest addition to the ATO family!  On September 3, Okkervil River will release their new album on ATO Records.  The album’s name, revealed letter-by-letter on OkkervilRiver.com, was announced today as The Silver Gymnasium.

This morning, Okkervil River revealed “It Was My Season”, the first song from The Silver Gymnasium, and more details about the new album produced by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., John Mellencamp, Cyndi Lauper). Will Sheff announced via Twitter: The Silver Gymnasium takes place in 1986 in a small town in New Hampshire  and the new lyric video takes listeners there.

On OkkervilRiver.com, Will Sheff explains the video was filmed in the Town Hall of Plainfield, NH – near where Sheff grew up – on a stage set painted by renowned American artist Maxfield Parrish in 1916. Depicting a classic New England woodland scene, Parrish designed the set to interact with a multi-part light show to simulate dawn, early morning, full afternoon sun, and dusk. In this video, Plainfield’s long-serving Town Librarian Nancy Norwalk operates the lightshow to the accompaniment of “It Was My Season.”

Sheff describes the inspiration for choosing this location:
“I remember nights as a kid where we’d go to the Town Hall and watch guys from the town get up and play little rock and roll sets in front of this beautiful three-dimensional Maxfield Parrish backdrop while ladies would sell cans of Coke and 7-Up through the concession window. As time passed in my life, the backdrop seemed less real to me and I wanted to go back to film it to see if it was really there and was as cool as I remember it. It’s even cooler now thanks to the great work of Nancy Norwalk and a group of Plainfield preservationists who cleaned and restored it a decade or so ago – the backdrop is still lit by a custom lighting rig special-ordered from New York City in 1916, though the Town Hall itself is over a hundred years older than that. For the first song from the record I wanted Nancy to give everybody out there in internetland a chance to see her run the beautiful times-of-day lightshow by hand to the accompaniment of the music.”

Okkervil River’s first tour dates of 2013 kick off with a performance at Monterey’s First City Festival in August and include shows at NYC’s Terminal on September 26 and LA’s The Wiltern on October 20. Tickets for all new tour dates go on pre-sale June 12, and a general sale starts June 14.

More details on The Silver Gymnasium will be revealed soon.

Independent Album of the YearBoys & Girls by Alabama Shakes (ATO Records)

Jon Salter, ATO Records: “We’re thankful for everything ATO has achieved this past year. It’s been a rewarding year and it’s an honor to be working with Alabama Shakes. Independents are contributing great, quality albums and it’s gratifying to see us in the same playing field as the majors.”

True Blood Vol. 4 Soundtrack Out Now

Following on the heels of its three previously Grammy-nominated volumes, the Volume 4 soundtrack of the acclaimed HBO® original series True Blood is now available everywhere, just one week after True Blood®: The Complete Fifth Season was released on DVD.

iTunes / Amazon / HBO True Blood Online Store

True Blood: Music From The HBO Original Series Volume 4 is once again produced by the show’s music supervisor Gary Calamar, who continues the True Blood soundtrack tradition of uniting legendary rock hall of famers with indie darlings such as Iggy Pop with Bethany Cosentino and Eric Burdon with Jenny Lewis.  Other never before released tracks include noted artists Alabama Shakes, Bosco Delrey, My Morning Jacket, Mobley, Deap Vally and Los Lobos, as well as a rare, out of print song by The Flaming Lips.  For the first time ever the soundtrack will also be available on vinyl, to be released mid-June.

Calamar carefully selects a musical tone for each episode; the fifth season’s debut “Turn! Turn! Turn!” featured My Morning Jacket’s cover of the classic tune by The Byrds, and after “Let’s Boot and Rally” became an episode title, Iggy and Bethany came on board to duet the punk rock duet song of the same name. Fans should lend an ear to season six as well, for three songs on the Volume 4 soundtrack will also be featured in upcoming episodes.

In anticipation of the May 28th release of True Blood® Music From The HBO Original Series Volume 4, we are thrilled to share the new version of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (Property of E Records and ABKCO Records) by Eric Burdon with Jenny Lewis. Transformed into a sultry duet, Burdon with Lewis has resurrected the classic blues-rock song originally popularized by Eric Burdon and The Animals in the late sixties.  Burdon and Lewis’s call and response approach, enhanced by their seductively intertwining vocal styles, lend a noir-esque feel to the track.

True Blood is centered in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana and follows the romance between waitress Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin), who can read minds, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (played by Stephen Moyer). Alan Ball (creator of the Emmy®-winning HBO series Six Feet Under) is creator and executive producer the show, which is based on the best-selling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. The highly anticipated sixth season premiere debuts on June 16th and runs through September.
