Lisa Hannigan’s new album ‘At Swim’ out now!
Critically acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan has returned with a new album At Swim – get At Swim now at Lisa’s Official Store or iTunes.
“At Swim is a triumph of Hannigan’s understated versatility, as a seemingly simple template morphs to make room for gracefully doomstruck ballads (“Prayer For The Dying,” “Funeral Suit”), comparatively peppy midtempo numbers (“Snow,” “Lo”), subtly glitchy and experimental sounds (“Undertow,” “Barton”) and a short, gorgeous swell of layered unaccompanied vocals (“Anahorish”).” – NPR
The video was shot in one afternoon outside London in the Alice Holt Forest – along with some rather rigid dance moves, viewers are greeted with stark imagery of just Hannigan in a crimson-red dress, surrounded by towering trees.
“There’s a sense of struggle in the song,” she says. “I didn’t want it to be too literal. “It was very peaceful, but a strange, eerie place.”
“Fall” is a song Hannigan co-wrote with songwriter Joe Henry. It’s the lead song on her upcoming third studio album,“At Swim,” which finds her exploring new sonic territory with the help of producer Aaron Dessner of the National.
“That was a turning point in terms of the flow of the record,” she says about connecting with Dessner on the 11 songs that make up “At Swim.”

Margaret Glaspy’s debut album ‘Emotions And Math’ is available now! Kelefa Sanneh of The New Yorker writes “The music is unadorned, the better to showcase Glaspy’s electric guitar and her extraordinary voice, as well as her plainspoken lyrics, which are, by turns, gently sentimental and firmly not.” Listen here: http://bit.ly/1ZDWLvv
Pitchfork also posted a review of ‘Emotions and Math’, saying the album “treats bad decisions and destructive impulses with compassionate clarity and heartfelt empathy.”
Margaret will play a hometown album release show at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right on Saturday, 6/18, with Alexander F And Jennah Bell to open. The show falls in the midst of an extensive tour with Lucius and on the heels of a performance this weekend at Bonnaroo. Later this summer, she’ll open select dates for Iron & Wine, play Lincoln Center with M. Ward, and make her debut at ACL Fest. Full list of dates below.
Vice says of Margaret Glaspy “Whatever expectation you might form for her, she will quickly upend it.” The New York Times says, “Her voice is raspily matter-of-fact and her guitar delivers a blunt, distorted riff.” NPR Music called her song “You And I” “one of the year’s best kiss-off songs.”

Jonny Fritz Announces “Sweet Creep”
Jonny Fritz is back with a new album, a new hip, and a new homebase in Los Angeles, CA. The singer/songwriter announced the forthcoming release of full length Sweet Creep today and shared first track “Are You Thirsty” via Rolling Stone Country. Available now for preorder, Fritz’s fourth studio album is due out October 14 via ATO Records and was produced by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James who influenced the album’s pared-down and uninhibited sound.
Pre-Order: Official Site | iTunes | Amazon
Sweet Creep includes the lyricism of prior release Dad Country with an added air of hopefulness. Recorded in James’ makeshift hilltop studio in Montecito Heights, Sweet Creep reverberates with the feeling of sunny vistas. From album opener “Are You Thirsty” to the summer-crushy “Humidifier”, Sweet Creep is a freshly-signed lease on life. Jonny throws himself into the new album by stripping things down to the essentials. He gathered Nashville’s Joshua Hedley and Dawes’ Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith and recorded the whole album in three days. The fresh air, freedom from studio pressures, and strong cups of tea all mix into the music, with ATVs briefly heard in the background and two senior tortoises listening at Hedley’s feet as he fiddles away.
Born in Montana and raised in Esmont, Virginia Jonny has passed weeks in nearly every city in the United States, and plenty others overseas, cramming ten lives into one. Despite the vitalism and exploits he’s gained a name for, most of his music comes from the smaller moments. He takes a little piece of life, unnoticed by most, then steeps it in song until it’s ready for vinyl. In contrast to the heartsick Dad Country, the songs of Sweet Creep are, if not always brimming, at least fully accepting of his fortunes.
Jonny is a torchbearer in that celebrated country music tradition of giant-sized personalities overflowing into song. John Hartford, Roger Miller, Billy Joe Shaver – fans look to these country musicians for more than just music. They look for life, for outrageous legend, for a showmanship on and off stage that Jonny Fritz will never fail to deliver. He might not have shot anybody, or spent any considerable time in prison, but on Sweet Creep, he reminds himself and his fans, that sometimes great lives can also be pretty good ones.

Watch the “You and I” video at NPR
“New York singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy‘s “You And I” is one of the year’s best earworms, with a simple but irresistible guitar riff that can wind its way deep in the brain and camp out for days. Now comes a new video for the song, with equally striking visuals that are both plain and potent. “I don’t want to see you cry,” Glaspy sings with a Mona Lisa smile, as she ambles through a monochromatic landscape. Each moment, from a picnic to a studio photo shoot and a nail salon, is shaded in its own single vivid color.” – NPR’s Robin Hilton
“I wrote down the idea for this video on the back of a set list,” Glaspy tells NPR Music via email. “Six weeks later, I got off tour and stepped into an elaborate world created by [director] Christopher Good and his crew that was based on that scrap of paper. In making the video, I knew that we weren’t going to make anything too directly narrative. The lyrics and meaning of the songs don’t belong to me anymore. You make records so people can have their own experience with them. It felt like a good opportunity to lighten up a bit and use my imagination visually.”
Watch Margaret perform “You and I” on Conan:
——–
Glaspy has earned early praise from The New York Times, Stereogum and NME. Rolling Stone hailed her “hot barbs of electric guitar,” and VICE Noisey love her “complex, deceptively heavy riffs with vocals that really stand out and grab you at the throat.”
“In a lot of ways, it’s kind of how I operate,” says Glaspy of her debut album’s title, Emotions and Math. “I’ve always considered myself a free spirit, someone who goes with the flow, but actually I’m not exactly like that. This record really taught me that I’m super analytical and process-driven. I think they really do go together, emotions and math. Nobody is just one thing.”
