Nilüfer Yanya Releases ‘Do You Like Pain?’ EP + Jazzi Bobbi Remix of “Thanks 4 Nothing”

Nilüfer Yanya’s “Effortless And Urgent” Single Gets Dark, Percussive Remix

Listen to “Thanks 4 Nothing” (Jazzi Bobbi Remix) off New EP ‘Do You Like Pain?’ out now

Pre-order ‘Do You Like Pain?’ on red 12″ 45rpm vinyl.

“The 22-year-old London singer makes jazz-pop that feels both effortless and urgent…Yanya’s hooks are always rife with dizzying romantic insight.” – Pitchfork

“Smoky, subtly emotive, and underpinned by a gorgeous falsetto that cracks on command, Nilüfer Yanya’s voice is a stunning instrument.” – NPR Music (one of the 2018 Slingshot Artists)

Nilüfer Yanya, London’s 22 year-old “effortlessly smooth new soul star” (The FADER) today revealed the remix for her latest single “Thanks 4 Nothing”, courtesy of bandmate and saxophonist Jazzi Bobbi. The remix completes her EP ‘Do You Like Pain?’which also sees full release today via ATO Records and is the first physical pressing of Nilüfer’s music in the US, now available for preorder. It will be available on 12” red vinyl also featuring “Baby Luv” (number 18 in Pitchfork’s 100 Best Songs of 2017) – and its psychedelic remix by ALASKALASKA – and of course current single “Thanks 4 Nothing” (“An absolutely great pop song.” – Vice Noisey). The EP is also available to buy digitally and stream today.

Speaking about the remix for Nilüfer, Jazzi said, “I wanted to bring out the darkness of Nilüfer’s song … I wanted to keep a lot of the original production but give it a twist e.g heavily effecting the original drum recordings and taking bits from the vocals to create percussive sounds as part of the beat. This was an exciting project for me, being able to put my own spin on a track written by a close friend of mine that I’ve also had the pleasure of playing live so many times.”

“Thanks 4 Nothing”, Nilüfer’s first single of 2018, details the darker thoughts surrounding a break up, a poignant look at a crumbling relationship that can’t be fixed, and is accompanied by a 70s-style, “Handmaid’s Tale meets Pulp Fiction” video directed by ENERGYFORCE. Described as “jazz-pop that feels both effortless and urgent” (Pitchfork), “Thanks 4 Nothing” establishes Nilüfer’s inevitable ascent in 2018, and proves NPR Music’s claim that she has “the sort of maturity you’d expect from a much older songwriter, but this is very clearly just the beginning for Nilüfer Yanya.”

2018 is looking bright for Nilüfer Yanya after landing a spot on the BBC’s annual Sound Of poll longlist, continuing a stellar 2017 in which she enjoyed extensive support from both mainstream and independent music, culture and fashion publications such as Pitchfork, NPR Music, The FADER and The New York Times, plus a host of tastemaker DJs at the BBC in London as well as KCRW and KEXP in the US. A further slew of best-of lists, including DIY’s ‘Class Of’ and The FADER’s ‘British Artists To Watch’, as well as GQ’s and Dork’s, firmly established Nilüfer as one of the most promising British songwriters and guitarists of her generation, and an in-demand new talent for this year.

Natalie Prass Announces New Record: ‘The Future and the Past’

NATALIE PRASS TO RELEASE ‘THE FUTURE AND THE PAST’ JUNE 1 ON ATO RECORDS

TOURING WITH FLEET FOXES IN MARCH + LA/NYC SHOWS ANNOUNCED

Natalie Prass had her new album written, her band ready, the recording studio booked.  Then the 2016 election happened, and out of her despair and disappointment in those results came an impulse she could not ignore: she rewrote the album to reflect these swirling emotions.  The result is ‘The Future and The Past’ (ATO Records/June 1), a stunning snapshot of a musician in a state of personal rediscovery and surging femininity.  The celebratory and defiant ‘The Future and The Past’ also signals a significant artistic leap for Prass on the heels of her 2015 breakthrough debut album.  It finds Prass tapping into deep, dancey grooves that glisten with 80s pop and 90s R&B, nestled alongside quivering, lushly orchestrated ballads.

The video for “Short Court Style” was directed by Natalie Prass and Erica Price with Jethro Waters as Director of Photography (Angel Olsen’s ‘Shut Up and Kiss Me video).

“The record was ready to go, and then the election happened,” explains Prass. “I was devastated. It made me question what it means to be a woman in America, whether any of the things I thought were getting better were actually improving, who I am and what I believe in. I knew I would be so upset with myself if I didn’t take the opportunity to say some of the things that meant so much to me, so I decided to rewrite the record. I needed to make an album that was going to get me out of my funk, one that would hopefully lift other people out of theirs, too, because that’s what music is all about.”

Like her debut album, Prass made ‘The Future and The Past’ in Richmond, VA with long-time friend and collaborator Matthew E. White at his Spacebomb Studios.  She added some new collaborations to the mix as well: Blue (Solange’s ‘A Seat At The Table,’ Blood Orange, Carly Rae Jepsen) and Michael Brauer (Elle King and James Bay). ‘Future’ is ripe with string orchestrations and piano flourishes, snaking synth lines and fuzzed out guitars.

‘The Future And The Past’ is bursting with a myriad of grooves and Natalie’s vocals float on top, light as a feather and tough as nails.  “Short Court Style” dials the tempo into 90s R&B territory – punctuated by handclaps, sampled “woos,” and a Dr. Dre-esque whistling synth line.  Lyrically she wields a sharp knife as well.  The love torn “Lost” begins with: “Turn up the fader, its like a lightning bolt / we can’t be saved, so now I’m listening on my own / Once there was a time when you had me hypnotized / you realized that your finger prints were on my bones.”  Funky feminist anthem “Sisters” is an empowering rallying cry: “I want to say it loud / for all the ones held down / we gotta change the plan.”

Natalie’s 2015 self-titled debut earned raves from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork (Best New Music), The New Yorker, NPR, and more. She played Bonnaroo, toured with Fleet Foxes and War on Drugs, and appeared on HBO’s Vinyl (as Karen Carpenter), Jools Holland and CBS Saturday.

She will be touring through 2018 including a March run with Fleet Foxes before headlining shows in Los Angeles, New York and a hometown show in Richmond, VA.

Okkervil River Shares “Don’t Move Back To LA”

On April 27, ATO Records will release Okkervil River’s In The Rainbow Rain, the group’s most immediate – and meaningful – album to date. On it, bandleader Will Sheff makes a startling left turn from the their critically-lauded and inward-looking 2016 album Away, crafting an exuberant declaration of hope. In place of Away’s somber strings and acoustic textures, In the Rainbow Rain is full of dazzling color, spattered with starbursts of electric guitar, big blooms of synth, and a chorus of backing vocals. It’s a buoyant and playful record, but also open and emotionally vulnerable. Sheff says, “I wanted to make a record where a sense of kindness felt encoded into the music.”

To accompany the announcement, Okkervil River have released new song “Don’t Move Back To LA,” the light-hearted midpoint of the album. Sheff says the song “had a very straightforward impulse behind it: a bunch of my best friends all moved to LA and I was really sad about it so I wrote a song about how I didn’t want them to leave…I think the song is also kind of about my own deep and long-held desire to get the hell out of New York City.”

Nick Hakim’s NPR “Tiny Desk Concert” session was published today as he launches a UK tour with a sold out show tonight in London. Hakim performed songs from his debut album Green Twins (ATO Records) which was released last year to wide critical praise including “Best of 2017” spotlights from The Guardian and Billboard. Last fall, album tracks were featured with TV syncs in HBO’s Insecure and Ava Duvernay’s Queen Sugar.

Next month, Hakim will set out on a solo tour with Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker, beginning March 6 at the Murmurr Theatre in Brooklyn. Additionally, he has announced a set of headline dates at the end of April.

Hailing from Washington, D.C., Hakim grew up in a musical household—his older brother introduced him to bands like Bad Brains and Nirvana, and his parents exposed him to Nueva canción—while he set out on his own to discover the DC music scene. He didn’t take an interest in learning an instrument until high school, when he taught himself to play the keys. After graduation, he moved to Boston to continue his study of music. In the time since moving to Brooklyn and setting to work for three years on Green Twins, he embraced the live circuit, both as a solo musician and with his band, whom he’s brought together from within his community in Boston and New York.

As promised at the beginning of the year, King Gizzard successfully released an unprecedented five studio albums in 2017 with the release of Gumboot Soup arriving this past New Year’s Eve. 2017’s other previous four records – February’s Flying Microtonal Banana, June’s Murder of the Universe, August’s Sketches of Brunswick East and November’s Polygondwanaland – have all received critical acclaim and contributed to a whirlwind year for the band. Some benchmarks include their first Coachella performance, their worldwide TV debut on Conan and headlining sold out shows at landmark venues including two nights at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall, two nights at New York City’s Webster Hall and San Francisco’s The Fillmore.

In years to come King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will be judged not by their separate albums, but by a body of work where themes, melodies, motifs, riffs and ideas resurface and recur, each album peeling back a layer of the onion to glimpse at past and future alike.
