Nilüfer Yanya Announces Debut Album, Miss Universe, With Video for “In Your Head”

“London’s most exciting pop artist” Pitchfork

“Her voice will surprise you, her raw, romantic songs about love and loss will break your heart, and you better get ready to hear more.” -Noisey

Boldness is warranted when you’ve got a hook as devastating as the one that Nilüfer Yanya repeats” -The New York Times

Pre-order Miss Universe HERE

Nilüfer Yanya, London’s 23 year-old “effortlessly smooth new soul star” (The FADER) has today announced her hotly-anticipated debut full length album Miss Universe. The record will be released onMarch 22 via ATO Records and launches today with the unveiling of Nilüfer’s new single and video “In Your Head”.

The stunning video for ‘In Your Head’ was filmed in the Las Vegas desert by longtime creative collaborator ENERGYFORCE and mirrors the track’s thrilling choruses and frantic energy. Speaking about “In Your Head”, Nilüfer said, “Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me and I get trapped. There’s the things I need disguised as things I think I only want, things I think I’m choosing out of choice not necessity. Sometimes this only becomes clear in retrospect, or maybe it will never become clear. Some people may call that being paranoid. I think that’s what I wrote the song about , but what’s interesting to me, and what I think I was trying to get at, is the illusion of freedom.”

Miss Universe was largely recorded in the same remote Penzance studio she used to jam in with her uncle Joe – a former musician himself – and features co-productions with both her former school guitar teacher The Invisible’s Dave Okumu and her live bandmates Jazzi Bobbi and Luke Bower, as well as producers John CongletonOli Barton-WoodWill Archer and M.T. Hadley.

2019 is starting in whirlwind fashion with Nilufer touring throughout February with Sharon Van Ettenacross North America. The tour kicks off in Washington, D.C. on February 6 before hitting several major cities including NYC, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and more. Following that run, Nilüfer will embark on her biggest U.K., Europe and Turkey headline tour to date in April, beginning with a show in Nilüfer’s father’s ancestral home Istanbul. Tickets for all of her upcoming tour dates are available from HERE.

Following her inclusion in the BBC’s influential Sound Of poll in 2018, Nilüfer was recently tipped as anArtist to Watch in 2019 by The Guardian, The Independent, NYLON, and more. The foundations are firmly laid for Nilüfer Yanya’s debut album – and her confirmation as a rare and utterly original British songwriting talent.

The Murlocs Share Video For New Single “Comfort Zone”

Australia’s The Murlocs, which features members of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, announced their first headlining North America tour and released a new single “Comfort Zone” with an accompanying video today. The tour includes stops at Shaky Knees, LA’s Teragram Ballroom, NYC’s Bowery Ballroom and Lincoln Hall in Chicago (all tour dates below). Tickets for all dates are on-sale now and available HERE.

Apple’s Beats 1 premiered The Murlocs’ new track “Comfort Zone” yesterday, and vocalist Ambrose Kenny-Smith explains poetically of it, “‘Comfort Zone is about finding shelter from the storm. Whilst others are out making a change most of us want to stay the same. Any fool can throw a punch but hate and violence won’t solve much. You can run but you can’t hide amongst the comfort zone of your own mind.” The song’s accompanying video is a dark and haunting tale, the juxtaposition between the music and the story the video tells making it all the more intriguing.

Inspired by the ganzfeld experiments of the 1970s which claim to provide compelling evidence for the existence of psychic abilities, director John Stewart explores what happens when this goes horrifically wrong in the “Comfort Zone” video. As he explains, “It is no surprise that the human psyche (whether one is aware of it or not) is soaked in fear and fascination with violence. I used the idea of a ‘comfort zone’ as an area to explore these fantasies and fears as they escalate. The ganzfield experiments used pseudo psychology to attempt to access the deeper recesses of a person’s ‘locked door’ of consciousness. What if they were to unlock some dark, ancient bloodlust buried deep?”

“Comfort Zone” is the band’s first new music since their 2017 album Old Locomotive. It was recorded in mid-2018 at Melbourne’s Newmarket studios, produced by Stu Mackenzie (King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard) and mixed by NYC musician Jarvis Taveniere (Real Estate, Woods, Parquet Courts).

Formed in late 2010 by harp player Ambrose Kenny-Smith, the five members of The Merlocs play their own blown-out, distorted brand of soulful RnB. They have already played numerous Australian music festivals as well as supporting acts such as Gary Clarke Jr., Mac Demarco, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, The Pixies, Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, Wavves and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Their up-tempo snare cracks and noisy guitars, accompanied by Ambrose’s warm vocals have been described as a mesmerizing, demented dance party.

The Murlocs will be playing as follows:

4/09 – Los Angeles, CA @ Teragram Ballroom

4/10 – San Francisco, CA @ The Chapel

4/12 – Portland, OR @ Mississippi Studios

Emily King’s New Album Scenery is Now Streaming on NPR First Listen

“Scenery is a precise-yet-fluid blend of ’80s pop and rock, contemporary R&B”

Emily King’s forthcoming album Scenery, out Feb 1 on ATO Records, is now streaming in full on NPR’s First Listen. Hear it now HERE.

Taken from her highly anticipated new album, Scenery (Feb 1, ATO Records), Emily says of the track, “I got tired of waiting around for someone else to please me. It became a song about self reliance. Realizing I didn’t need anyone else to make me feel good in any way, I only needed to trust myself.”

Scenery, produced by long time musical cohort Jeremy Most and mixed Tom Elmhirst (Adele, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie) was recorded in upstate New York, nestled in the Catskill Mountains, where Emily now makes her home after a lifetime of Lower East Side living. “Can’t Hold Me” is the latest single off of Scenery — coming after “Remind Me” and “Look at Me Now.”

Scenery follows the critically acclaimed album The Switch (2015) which included the hit “Distance” (more than 13 million streams). Following the album’s release, King performed on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Conan, Prairie Home Companion, and toured with Alabama Shakes. This is her first release with ATO Records.

A proud New Yorker, Emily spent her first three decades living on the same Downtown block. She loved her home, her family, her friends, and her life there. But last year, when she finally resolved to challenge herself by moving out of her comfort zone, positive changes started taking shape immediately. In Upstate New York, the fresh air and fresh mentality gave her the proper space and perspective to create what would become the album of her career. Its name: Scenery.

Last year, Prass released her critically-acclaimed sophomore album The Future and the Past on ATO Records. NPR Music said, “With interplay between old sounds and new technologies, a blurring of the personal and the political, and, of course, a stylistic evolution from Prass herself, this new album neither absolves us of the past it decries or lays a blueprint for the future it hopes for. But it does make the here and now sound a whole lot groovier,” while Consequence of Sound said, “Faced with the unexpected, Prass evolved, trading inward-facing confessionalism for outward-facing perseverance and releasing one of 2018’s minor masterpieces in the process.”

Prass is now currently on tour with Kacey Musgraves. Find a full list of tour dates below.

Amazon Music listeners can simply ask, “Alexa play the latest song by Natalie Prass” in the Amazon Music app for iOS and Android and on Alexa-enabled devices. In addition to the new track, Amazon Music listeners can access hundreds of Amazon Originals featuring both emerging and established artists across numerous genres, available to stream and purchase only on Amazon Music.

Rayland Baxter Shares “Hey Larocco” Video + Adds New Spring Dates to Current Tour

“A catchy collection of pop hooks that mix Beatles melodies with a bottom-end groove torn from the Stax Records playbook…Baxter’s sharpest batch of social commentary” -Rolling Stone

“As a songwriter, Rayland’s got a way of twisting near-universal truths into new ideas and songs” -NPR

“This is modern, American rock music at its finest”Relix

“Wide Awake is Baxter fully blossoming from the folk singer bud we’ve come to know into a full-blown master of pop music” -No Depression

Rayland Baxter is sharing a new video for his single “Hey Larocco” via Rolling Stone today. Directed and filmed entirely on an iPhone in Key West, Florida by Asher Moss, the video is the second installment in a trilogy (which kicked off with the “Casanova” video in October) that sees Rayland on the run from the law. Rolling Stone called it “an engaging freewheeling fugitive romp… a spiritual descendent of Baxter’s most recent video ‘Casanova’.”

Rayland is currently in the middle of a massive US run, christened the “hey baby hey baby” tour, playing the biggest headline shows of his career including a nearly sold-out NYC date at Brooklyn Steel, and just added West Coast dates in March including a stop at the Teragram Theatre in LA (all tour dates below). Rayland is touring in support of his latest LP Wide Awake which won critical acclaim across the Americana and rock spectrum. Lead single “Casanova” shot up the Triple A charts to land at #9; GQ named it one of their Songs of the Summer 2018.

NPR Music called Wide Awake “perfection…a huge leap [that] dips into the rich tradition of witty, sonically complex pop”, and the record has also been spotlighted by the New York Times, Paste, American Songwriter, World Cafe, Relix, No Depression, and Flaunt among other places. Currently Rayland has over one million monthly listeners on Spotify and has been featured on numerous Spotify and Apple Music playlists. This summer, he opened several shows on Shakey Graves’ August tour before a run of West Coast headline dates that saw sellouts in numerous markets including LA, Portland and Seattle.

Wide Awake is produced by Butch Walker (Weezer, Pink, Pete Yorn) and features Walker himself on bass, Cage the Elephant’s Nick Bockrath on guitar, Dr. Dog’s Eric Slick on drums, and piano wizard Aaron Embry (Elliott Smith, Brian Eno) on keys. Rayland’s father Bucky Baxter contributes pedal steel, as does original Nashville cat Lloyd Green.

Nilüfer Yanya Shares New Single & Video “Heavyweight Champion of the Year”

Hear “Heavyweight Champion Of The Year” HERE

“The 22-year-old London-based singer-songwriter has a knack for writing lyrics that seem to stare you straight in the eye” – The FADER

“For a young artist, Yanya already has an impressive range, and her ability to render the highs and lows of life in her songs is no small feat” – Pitchfork

Nilüfer Yanya, London’s 23 year-old “effortlessly smooth new soul star” (The FADER) today shared a stunning, expansive new single ‘Heavyweight Champion of the Year’, with an intimate, self-reflective accompanying visual. The track was co-produced by Nilüfer herself, and live band members saxophonist Jazzi Bobbi and bassist Luke Bower. It is out now on ATO Records and precedes Nilüfer’s run of UK and European shows supporting Interpol.

‘Heavyweight Champion of the Year’ comes from a place of introspection, with Nilüfer describing the track, “‘Heavyweight Champion…’ for me is about reaching my own metaphorical bar, reaching my own limits within myself, and kind of forbidding myself to take it further. It feels like quite a physical song, quite physically tired – and mentally, but knowing the desire is still there to continue. I imagine it sometimes in my head as drawing a line around me and the outside world – a form of self protection and preservation.”

The video for ‘HCOTY’ is directed again by ENERGYFORCE, the creative team behind all of Nilüfer’s stunning DIY visuals including those for earlier tracks ‘Thanks 4 Nothing’ and ‘Baby Luv’. Nilüfer explains, “The video is about the concept of performance and the relation to the individual. We are never really sure who is the real me.” She continues, “This is because we are all in a state of constant performance, whether that be in everyday life or being in front of a camera. Even when we are not performing, how do we know we are not performing? Which is the genuine and which is the fake? Only in retrospect we can look back and realise ‘I wasn’t being myself’ or ‘I was completely myself’.”

This November, as previously mentioned, Nilüfer will head out on the road with Interpol across the United Kingdom and Europe. She recently announced a run of North American tour dates with Sharon Van Etten throughout February 2019 (all tour dates below).

Nilüfer’s 2018 Do You Like Pain? EP featured the widely acclaimed tracks ‘Baby Luv’ and ‘Thanks 4 Nothing’, both of which were awarded “Best New Track” by Pitchfork, the esteemed music site’s highest honor. In addition, the tracks and EP received accolades from an enormous number of outlets including Billboard, BBC Radio 1, Stereogum, Noisey, The Guardian, DIY, NME, FACT and KEXP. A further slew of tips lists, including DIY’s ‘Class Of’ and The FADER’s ‘British Artists To Watch’, as well as The Sunday Times’, GQ’s and Dork’s, firmly established Nilüfer as one of the most promising British songwriters and guitarists of her generation; attention will soon turn to her hotly-anticipated debut record – due in early 2019 on ATO Records.

Emily King Unveils “Look At Me Now” Video Live From Apogee Studios

GRAMMY® nominated recording artist Emily King releases the video for “Look At Me Now” today, directed by George Mays and filmed at Apogee Studios in Los Angeles.

Pre-Order Scenery HERE

Emily King will be releasing her upcoming album Scenery on February 1st via ATO Records. The album, produced by long time musical cohort Jeremy Most and mixed Tom Elmhirst (Adele, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie) was recorded in upstate New York, nestled in the Catskill Mountains, where Emily now makes her home after a lifetime of Lower East Side living.

For Emily King, the pop-soul singer from New York City who spent her first three decades living on the same Midtown block, that notion was always easier said than done. A proud New Yorker, she loved her home, her family, her friends, and her life there. But last year, when she finally resolved to challenge herself by moving out of her comfort zone, positive changes started taking shape immediately. In Upstate New York, the fresh air and fresh mentality gave her the proper space and perspective to create what would become the album of her career. Its name: Scenery.

Without a doubt, King has carved out such a space for herself. With Scenery, she has challenged herself to create new roots, both in physical form as well as sonically. “For me, Scenery is about taking a chance and having an adventure, with themes of independence, confidence, and self-reliance throughout, and having a sense of freedom and self-worth,” she says. “I’m really proud of this record because we took time to make sure it was right. We let time pass in between creating, recording, and listening, so that my true judgment can be revealed, ego goes away, and you see it for what it is. Sometimes you have blinders on because you want it to be good so badly. When I listen to this record there are no cringe-y moments. I’m proud of the process.
