Amanda Shires Shares New Single From Upcoming Album ‘Take It Like A Man’

GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter and virtuoso violinist Amanda Shires has shared her haunting new single, “Hawk For The Dove” out today listen  HERE. The music video for the track was also released today – watch below. The track is the first new single to be unveiled from her extraordinary forthcoming album Take It Like a Man, set for release July 29. Pre-order the album HERE.

The new album Take It Like A Man is a fearless confessional featuring 10 emotionally raw tracks, produced by the talented gender-fluid singer-songwriter and producer, Lawrence Rothman, (Angel Olsen, Girl in Red, Courtney Love). Upon hearing Amanda for the first time Lawrence said, “I was just mesmerized. I thought she was the new Dolly Parton; Dolly for a new generation.” With the album, Shires hit the reset button and made a record so unlike anything she’s ever recorded that it feels like her debut album instead of her seventh.  Written and recorded during lockdown, the new record features Isbell on guitar on several tracks and guest vocals from Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and Brittney Spencer.   Take It Like A Man is a song cycle of ruthlessly candid tunes written as a document by Amanda about her life as a woman, a wife (to husband Jason Isbell) and a mother during a tumultuous time.

Pink Mountaintops’ New Album ‘Peacock Pools’ Out Now

Pink Mountaintops’ fifth full-length, Peacock Pools, is out today!  Since their 2004 self-titled debut, Pink Mountaintops have supplied an outlet for the more arcane fascinations of Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean. On Peacock Pools—Pink Mountaintops’ first new music in eight years—the British Columbia-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist shares 12 songs sparked from his magpie-like curiosity for a wild expanse of cultural artifacts: the sci-fi body horror of David Cronenberg, Disney Read-Along Records from the 1970s, early Pink Floyd and mid-career Gary Numan, John Carpenter movies, Ornette Coleman live videos, a 1991 essay on the cult of bodybuilding by postmodern feminist Camille Paglia. Featuring counterculture icons like Steven McDonald of Redd Kross and Dale Crover of Melvins, Peacock Pools alchemizes those obsessions into a body of work with its own enchanting power, the sonic equivalent of falling down a thousand rabbit holes at once and landing somewhere gloriously strange.

Pink Mountaintops is on tour now with Ashley Shadow. Tickets available HERE.

Pink Mountaintops

Since their 2004 self-titled debut, Pink Mountaintops have supplied an outlet for the more arcane fascinations of Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean. Featuring counterculture icons like Steven McDonald of Redd Kross and Dale Crover of Melvins, Peacock Pools alchemizes those obsessions into a body of work with its own enchanting power, the sonic equivalent of falling down a thousand rabbit holes at once and landing somewhere gloriously strange…

Pink Mountaintops’ fifth full-length and debut release, Peacock Pools took shape from a batch of songs McBean first pieced together in the early days of the pandemic. “I’d moved into this cool little ’50s rancher house outside L.A. and was just mucking about in my bedroom studio, and pretty soon I started reaching out to some friends who were also shacked up and craving broadband sonic collaboration,” he recalls. Over the coming months, McBean began working remotely with a stacked lineup of musicians from the indie-rock and psych-pop and garage-punk worlds, including drummer/pianist Joshua Wells (Destroyer, Black Mountain), violinist/vocalist Laena Myers-Ionita (Feels, Death Valley Girls), drummer Ryan Jewell (Riley Walker, Steve Gunn), vocalist Emily Rose Epstein (Ty Segall, Emily Rose & The Rounders), and keyboardist Jeremy Schmidt (Black Mountain, Sinoia Caves). Produced by McBean and mixed in Vancouver by former Skinny Puppy member Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails), Peacock Pools also features several songs recorded live in L.A. with McDonald and Crover, ultimately forming Pink Mountaintops most eclectic and magnificently unpredictable album to date.

Old Crow Medicine Show’s New Album ‘Paint This Town’ Out Today

Today, Old Crow Medicine Show releases their seventh studio album Paint This Town. Marking a return to form for the two-time GRAMMY award-winning group, Paint This Town is already garnering widespread acclaim, with many critics calling it their best release to date. The band will celebrate with a special album release show tonight in The Blue Room at Third Man Records, streaming live on SiriusXM Outlaw Country.

Fueled by Old Crow Medicine Show’s freewheeling collision of Americana, old-time music, folk and rock & roll, Paint This Town pulls off the rare and essential feat of turning razor-sharp commentary into the kind of songs that inspire rapturous singing along. From the rollicking debut single “Paint This Town” to the rowdy divorce anthem “Bombs Away” to the melancholy love song “Honey Chile” and the gospel-inspired “Gloryland,” Paint This Town is Old Crow Medicine Show’s most incisive body of work to date. The band recorded the album in their very own East Nashville-based Hartland Studio and co-produced it with Matt Ross-Spang (John Prine, Jason Isbell), resulting in a riveting collection of songs that recall the unpredictable punk-ethos of their earliest busking days. Nearly 25 years into their career, the new album shows us exactly why this group has become one of the most influential and respected roots acts of the last two decades.

Old Crow Medicine Show has hit the road for a coast to coast spring/summer tour in support of Paint This Town. Find a full list of tour dates below or at www.crowmedicine.com/tour.

Primus Releases ‘Conspiranoid’ EP, The Band’s First New Music in Five Years

Having just launched their 64-date ‘A Tribute To Kings’ world tour, paying homage to prog-rock legends, Rush, Primus has released their first new music in more than 5 years, the 3-song EP Conspiranoid, out today. The EP features the epic, 11-minute opening track, “Conspiranoia,” which Claypool described as “a long, winding, bastard of a song.” He adds:  “”Conspiranoia” was sprouted from a seed I had planted in my notebook a year or so ago–a few lines commenting on the mental state of the contemporary world.” A vinyl edition of the EP will be released on August 12th.

The Conspiranoid EP follows the release of “Zelensky: The Man With the Iron Balls,” a collaboration with Eugene Hütz of Gogol Bordello, written to rally support for the Ukrainian people. Released this week via Rolling Stone, the track also features Stewart Copeland, Sean Lennon, Billy Strings, and Sergey Ryabtsev, with proceeds supporting Nova Ukraine, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. The artists are inviting listeners to show their support by submitting clips of themselves, their friends, colleagues, children, pets, or anyone else they deem appropriate clapping along to the song. Video clips can be sent to ironballs@primusville.com and additional details can be found in the video notes here.

Primus’ wildly popular ‘A Tribute To Kings’ Tour finds the Bay area trio performing Rush’s 1977 album ‘A Farewell To Kings’ in its entirety, following a set of their own music. Winding its way throughout the North American and ultimately to Europe this fall, the second leg also included the tour’s first stops in Canada, beginning with two dates in Toronto on May 13-14. Rush was formed in Toronto in 1968. The US performances are also featuring special guests Battles, Black Mountain, and The Black Angels.

Nilüfer Yanya Releases “The Dealer” Video; North America Tour Launches At Coachella This Week

Following the release of her sophomore album PAINLESS, London artist Nilüfer Yanya shares the visuals for “the dealer.” Doused in flashes of blue and red light, Nilüfer performs the song with kaledoscopic edits and ends with clips of the artist cleansed by rainfall.

PAINLESS, which garnered Best New Music from Pitchfork, see’s Nilüfer at her most direct and open yet. The title comes from a grown understanding that pain isn’t always a negative thing, while also experiencing a freeing kind of joy while making this record. The 12-track album features “anotherlife,” which arrived with a music video directed by Molly Daniel in Sri Lanka, “stabilise” and “midnight sun“, which Nilüfer recently performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Nilüfer Yanya just wrapped up the European dates of her 2022 world tour and begins the North American leg with her performance at Coachella next week. Tickets are on sale now HERE.

Drive-By Truckers Return with New Album ‘Welcome 2 Club XIII’

Drive-By Truckers have announced the release of their 14th studio album, Welcome 2 Club XIII, due June 3. Pre-orders are available now. Welcome 2 Club XIII is heralded by today’s premiere of its swinging title track, “Welcome 2 Club XIII,” available for streaming and download; the track – which pays homage to the Muscle Shoals honky-tonk where founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley got their start – is joined by an official music video streaming now via YouTube.

There were no cool bars in town and Club XIII was the best we had,” says Hood, referring to the two vocalist/guitarists’ former band, Adam’s House Cat, “but it wasn’t all that good, and our band wasn’t particularly liked there. From time to time the owner would throw us a Wednesday night or let us open for a hair-metal band we were a terrible fit for, and everyone would hang out outside until we were done playing. It wasn’t very funny at the time, but it’s funny to us now.

Arriving as Drive-By Truckers enters its 26th year, Welcome 2 Club XIII marks a sharp departure from the trenchant commentary of The Unraveling and The New OK (both released in 2020). Produced by longtime Drive-By Truckers collaborator David Barbe and mainly recorded at his studio in Athens, GA, Welcome 2 Club XIII took shape over the course of three frenetic days in summer 2021 – a doubly extraordinary feat considering that the band had no prior intentions of making a new album. Featuring background vocals from the likes of Margo Price, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, and Mississippi-bred singer/songwriter Schaefer Llana, Welcome 2 Club XIII was recorded live with most songs cut in one or two takes, fully harnessing Drive-By Truckers’ freewheeling energy. Songs like epic, darkly thrilling “The Driver” and the spirited, horn-blasted “Every Single Storied Flameout” see the band – whose lineup also includes keyboardist/guitarist Jay Gonzalez, bassist Matt Patton, and drummer Brad Morgan – looking back on their formative years with both deadpan pragmatism and profound tenderness, instilling each song with the kind of lived-in detail that invites bittersweet reminiscence of your own misspent youth.

Cooley and I have been playing together for 37 years now,” Hood says. “That first band might have failed miserably on a commercial level, but I’m really proud of what we did back then. It had a lot to do with who we ended up becoming.

Drive-By Truckers – who just wrapped their annual four-day “Heathen Homecoming” event at Athens, GA’s famed 40 Watt – are currently celebrating Welcome 2 Club XIII with a marathon live schedule, including top-billed festival dates, and North American, European, and UK headline tours. Adrian Quesada Announces ‘Boleros Psicodélicos’, Out June 3

Adrian Quesada has announced the release of Boleros Psicodélicos, a sprawling and singular tribute to the golden era of balada music. Out June 3, the brand new album from the GRAMMY-winning guitarist, producer and Black Pumas co-founder serves as a celebration of the super funky, slightly delirious and deeply soulful sounds that transcended the cultural boundaries of Latin America throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. Featuring vocals from Puerto Rican icon, GRAMMY-winner and former Calle 13 member iLe, Colombian-American visionary Gabriel Garzón-Montano, Mexican R&B star Girl Ultra, as well as Angelica Garcia, Gaby Moreno, contributions from living legends such as Marc Ribot and Beastie Boys musician Money Mark, and many more, Boleros Psicodélicos consists primarily of original Adrian Quesada compositions, as well as covers of La Lupe’s “Puedes Decir De Mí,” Jeanette’s “El Muchacho De Los Ojos Tristes” and other balada classics. All twelve tracks were produced, engineered, mixed and largely performed by Adrian Quesada, honoring and extending the influence of a personal obsession that he has cultivated over the past 20 years.

While Adrian Quesada grew up bilingual, living on the Texas/Mexico border city of Laredo, it was in the early 2000s during a drive around his current home of Austin when he first encountered the tripped-out, baroque, melodramatic anomaly of a Peruvian band called Los Pasteles Verdes. Their 1975 balada hit “Esclavo y Amo,” recreated with Natalia Clavier on Boleros Psicodélicos, blasted from a local AM radio station and blew Quesada’s mind. After pulling his car over in awe, he went to a record store specializing in regional Mexican music, picked up a greatest hits compilation and, in turn, a lifelong obsession took root.

Fast forward to 2020 and the COVID-19 lockdown sent Quesada deeper down the rabbit hole than ever before. Poring over YouTube archives, his knowledge extended from bands like Los Pasteles Verdes and Los Ángeles Negros to artists such as Sandro and José José, as his sonic palette expanded from reverb-heavy guitar and organ to the harpsichords and orchestral arrangements that define so much of balada’s romance. As a master collaborator who has worked with the likes of Prince, Los Lobos and Wu-Tang’s GZA, Quesada began to compile a list of vocalists to join him in penning an album-length love letter to the genre, including artists and musicians he knew would either immediately understand the music, discover their own affection, or take him out of his comfort zone with inspiration from unexplored styles and sources.

Similar to his acclaimed 2018 album Look At My Soul, which traced the deep roots and relationship between Latin and Texas music, Adrian Quesada sees every song on BolerosPsicodélicos as both a history lesson and a step towards a newly imagined, more united future:

“I always wanted to pay tribute to that sound that I was already hearing in my head without realizing that people had already done it. Balada changed the face of Latin music forever. If something like that happened today, it would be normal because everyone’s connected on Instagram. Think how powerful this sound had to be for everyone to be connected through the songs. As someone who grew up speaking two languages and living on both sides of the border, I love how much music can transcend barriers and boundaries. It really is a universal language, especially back then.”

“Making ‘Mentiras Con Cariño’ with Adrian was very fun since we share a similar appreciation for old school boleros,” adds iLe. “We both love the style of musical arrangements and textures that became a classic signature sound in those times where imperfections made everything feel just right. I wrote this song thinking about feeling sufficient with yourself on your own, even though love didn’t turn out to be the way you wanted.”

Music video director Cesar Berrios says, “‘Mentiras con Cariño’ gives off a timeless aura. Working together with Adrian and iLe, we really wanted to make the visuals for this song to feel like a late ‘60s, early ‘70s performance. From the aspect ratio to the final image. It was a fun video to shoot and the vibes were immaculate.”

Midlake Release Album ‘For The Sake of Bethel Woods’

With their acclaimed new album, For the Sake of Bethel Woods, out now following a number of high-profile live appearances at SXSW, Midlake have also shared a live performance of the recently released track “Noble” from the LP. One of the most personal and moving songs from the album, the song is named after drummer McKenzie Smith’s infant son “Noble” who was born with a rare brain disorder. Filmed at Modern Electric Sound Recorders in Dallas, Texas, the video is was directed by Rett Rogers and is the third in a series of live performances the band have shared ahead of the album’s release.

“Noble was born with a rare brain disease,” says frontman Eric Pulido. “When he was born, they were told the life expectancy of most children with his disease was between six months to two years. The heavy nature of Noble’s condition and the new reality for my friend and bandmate McKenzie (and his wife and daughter) wasn’t something we took lightly. We were really excited to create this song for him and for Noble to not only acknowledge the struggle but also celebrate this amazing and beautiful boy. The wonderful news is that more than two years later, Noble is still here with us! He has beaten so many odds already and continues to amaze and prove to us how incredibly strong he is. His life is extremely challenging on many levels, so every day we have with him is a precious gift.” For anyone who wants to donate or support Noble, please visit noble.midlakeband.com

This live performance video of “Noble” follows the release of the song earlier this month and marks the eagerly awaited arrival of Midlake’s fifth studio album, For The Sake Of Bethel Woods. Mattiel New Album ‘Georgia Gothic’ Out Now

Atlanta-based duo Mattiel have released their eagerly-anticipated 3rd album Georgia Gothic, that includes “Jeff Goldblum,” which the duo performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s #LateShowMeMusic series, “Lighthouse,” “Blood In The Yolk,” and “Cultural Criminal.”

Speaking on “Cultural Criminal” the duo says: “I’m not sure what it will mean for listeners, I hope it’s interpreted in different ways by different people. But ‘Cultural Criminal’ was written as a reminder to myself to question everything and to avoid the trappings of “thought police,” so to speak. And just to maintain my focus and attention span during a time when we’re all being assaulted by media and advertising at any given moment. I’d just say… I prefer to think for myself and surround myself with people who may see the world differently than I do. Getting out of the echo chamber, you know?”

The album follows a busy week for the band at SXSW in Austin, with a schedule of performances that included Linda Perry’s EqualizeHer, SPIN and Rolling Stone showcases, the latter of which streamed live on Twitch. The week in Austin is part of the band’s North American tour that is currently underway, captivating audiences with back-to-back sold out shows in Brooklyn earlier this month, which will wrap up in Louisville on April 23rd before the band heads to Europe for the second leg of the tour in May. Tickets available HERE.

Georgia Gothic re-introduces the Georgia duo as seamless collaborators, but also as a pair of friends and creative partners whose tastes, inspirations and mutual adoration of their shared home state of Georgia intertwine with the music they make. With much of it recorded free of distractions and surrounded by northern Georgia forest, the album hones in on Mattiel and Jonah’s collective identity as a duo, working together and challenging one another to develop the sound that feels like home. The result is an album that embodies the otherworldly range and lovable oddity of their state’s musical tapestry, from country guitar and crooning Americana to shimmering pop rock and hints of Atlanta hip-hop’s lasting influence, Georgia Gothic is Mattiel’s ode to home and how it shaped them.

Check out the official live video for “Cultural Criminal” and order/stream Georgia Gothic here and see below for their full run of tour dates.
