Watch Rhett Miller’s New Video for “Most in the Summertime” at Salon

Head to Salon to watch the new music video for Rhett Miller‘s “Most in the Summertime”, directed by Max Nichols. A standout track from Miller’s latest solo album The Traveler, the warm, bouncy song with darker undertones now has a video to match.

Rhett Miller’s new album, The Traveler, is out now. After twenty years as the lead singer and guitarist of the Old 97’s, Miller’s restless drive to create meaningful music and perform for the audiences it inspires is clearly nowhere near slowing down.

Although the album was written and performed by Miller he also had some help, most notably by the members of Black Prairie, the Portland-based that plays everything from bluegrass to klezmer to country and shares members with the Decemberists. Peter Buck of REM also added additional guitar work. All upcoming tour dates are listed below.

Rhett Miller is the type of singer/songwriter whom would need no introduction in a just world – but life’s not fair and his string of mini-masterpieces solo and with the Old 97’s have found a sizable cult audience with songs that deserve to make him a household name. – SPIN

Sound & Color is the follow-up to the band’s Gold-certified debut album, Boys & Girls, which earned them three GRAMMY nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist.

“Soul-stirring, shape-shifting new sound.”  – NEW YORK TIMES

“This is a weirder, woozier, fiercer and sexier record than their debut in nearly every way.” – ROLLING STONE

“The Shakes’ furious energy can bridge geographical divides and remind you that rock and soul aren’t mutually exclusive” – ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of “Shoegaze” or the garage-rock freak-out on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini.” The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus.

You can now stream Alabama Shakes‘ new album Sound & Color, out April 21, at NPR. Listen to the album here. Ann Powers says of the new album:

“This album, so much more confident and wide-ranging than the band’s outstanding 2012 debut Boys & Girls, is not merely Southern rock, any more than the Allman Brothers are merely Southern rock. … It has punk elements, a song called “Shoegaze,” punishing heavy-metal chords, and falsetto singing that might make Prince envious. There are love songs like “Miss You,” spiked with charming little details, and cosmic adventures like “Future People” and the profane, biblical “Dunes.” These songs take their time, stretching time, turning it vertical and sideways through riffs, keyboard lines and rhythms that beg for organic metaphors of river currents and shifting sediment.

As a singer, Howard can deliver any blues or soul cliché with ease — or any rock cliché, for that matter — but her approach is singular. It’s punk in its refusal to conform, glam in its theatrical flair, jazz in its self-directed, often unexpected musicality.”
