Neal Francis Returns With “Back It Up”

Acclaimed singer-songwriter-pianist Neal Francis returns today with his dance-ready new single, “Back It Up,” available now  via ATO Records. An official music video premieres today on YouTube.

Francis’ first new music in almost two years, “Back It Up” sees the Chicago-based singer, songwriter, and prodigious pianist effortlessly gliding along on glossy synth lines and a playfully swaggering riff, imbuing a carefree spirit into the deliberately over-the-top confession of romantic desperation. That song went through a few different phases before we got to the final iteration,” Francis says. “It took me a while to accept that it’s okay to have fun with the lyrics, instead of making everything so serious all the time.

ABOUT NEAL FRANCIS:

Neal Francis’s music is an intoxicating blend of funk, soul, and rock that evokes the glory days of the late 60s and 70s but is undeniably fresh. Francis has been making music at the piano since the age of four, sitting in with countless Chicago bands as a teenager before setting out on his own solo career. His 2019 debut album, Changes, swiftly drew lavish applause, hailed as “the reincarnation of Allen Toussaint” by BBC Radio 6 and lauded by KCRW which raved, “What do Dr. John, Leon Russell and boogie woogie piano have in common? Neal Francis is the answer.

Francis’s acclaimed second LP, In Plain Sight, followed in 2021, once again earning international praise from such publications as Rolling Stone, which declared the album “a must hear,” and MOJO, which wrote, “Francis digs deep on guileless rock and soul with bold flourishes, ala Lowell George or Randy Newman.

An equally gifted live performer, Francis has sold out headline shows across the globe, shared the stage with Wilco and members of The Meters, supported the likes of My Morning Jacket, Marcus King, and Black Pumas, appeared at major festivals such as Bonnaroo, Fuji Rock,  and Lollapalooza, and even performed at historic venues like Carnegie Hall. The dazzling power of Francis’s energetic live performances was recently captured for posterity with 2023’ double live album and concert film, Francis Comes Alive. which GRAMMY.com noted “could’ve been cut in 1973 or 2023 — as if The Band, The Meters, Wings and Dr. John had become unstuck in time.

Friko Announces Debut Album Expanded Edition & 2025 Headline Tour

Chicago’s Friko  — led by vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan and drummer Bailey Minzenberger   — announces an expanded edition of Where we’ve been, Where we go from here, out November 22nd on ATO Records, alongside a massive 2025 North American headlining tour. The album’s initial release earlier this year was met with glowing praise from publications and fans alike, catapulting Friko into the international spotlight. The 2XLP vinyl and digital release expands upon the “chamber-pop tapestries” and “oily post-punk” (Pitchfork) of the band’s debut, featuring demos from the Where we’ve been, Where we go from here sessions, eleven bonus tracks including today’s new single, “If I Am,” live tracks from a sold-out hometown Metro show, and a cover of My Bloody Valentine’s “When You Sleep.”

“‘If I Am,’ along with the rest of the other new songs on this expanded edition, go back as far as 2019,” Friko explains. “They were some of the first songs we played at DIY and small club shows in Chicago. They kind of got left behind after we had written the songs for the record but we’re so glad they’re getting to see the light of day because they were some of the first songs we wrote as a band.”

Listen to “If I Am”

This summer, Friko made festival debuts at Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Fuji Rock, and toured with Royel Otis, Water From Your Eyes, WILLIS, and Mind’s Eye. Next week, they’ll embark on their first European headline tour, during which they’ll appear at Pitchfork Festival London. Today’s newly-announced dates see the band returning to New York City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and more, while headlining many cities for the first time. Known for their high-energy live show, Friko aims to deliver a live experience that’s fantastically disorienting in its emotional arc, so this will be a tour not to miss. Tickets are on sale this Friday at 10am local time.

—  Uproxx, Steven Hyden’s Favorite Albums of 2024 So Far

My Morning Jacket Announces MMJ Live Vol. 4: Terminal 5 – NYC- The Tennessee Fire 10/18/10

My Morning Jacket has announced the latest installment in their MMJ LIVE vinyl series, MMJ Live Vol. 4: Terminal 5 – NYC – The Tennessee Fire 10/18/10, arriving on 3xLP red vinyl via ATO Records on Friday, November 22. The 22-track collection documents the opening night of My Morning Jacket’s 2010 complete catalog run at New York City’s Terminal 5, a five-night stand which kicked off with a performance of their landmark 1999 debut album, The Tennessee Fire, in its entirety, along with a seven-song encore highlighted by covers of Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” and Rod Stewart’s “Hot Legs.”

MMJ Live Vol. 4: Terminal 5 – NYC – The Tennessee Fire 10/18/10 is heralded by today’s premiere of a smoldering live take on the classic ballad, “I Will Be There When You Die,” available everywhere now.

“Folks have been asking us for these T5 shows for quite a while and we finally had time to dig in and begin!,” said My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. “it’s been such a beautiful DOUBLE BLAST FROM THE PAST listening to this show- taking us back to the good times we had at T5 so many years ago and at the same time taking us EVEN FURTHER back in time AGAIN to the EARLY days of the band even longer ago!”

LISTEN TO “I WILL BE THERE WHEN YOU DIE”

PRE-ORDER MMJ LIVE VOL. 4: TERMINAL 5 – NYC – THE TENNESSEE FIRE 10/18/10

My Morning Jacket’s unprecedented complete catalog run at Terminal 5 saw the band performing every MMJ studio album in their career to date, with each night also featuring a second encore set full of period appropriate rarities and surprising covers. The five-night stand was met by applause from such longtime fans as Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, who praised how the band explored their evolving body of work “with grateful ecstasy, recalling each step and stumble forward in their first decade with fierce delight and humbled shock.

“There are two ways to do a classic studio record in concert: Exactly as it was made, original nuances intact; or as fresh meat, the way the songs would get cut now, with evolved powers and lessons learned,” Fricke wrote. “(The Tennessee Fire) was literally homemade, recorded by Jim James on DAT cassette with a band that had barely played live,” Fricke wrote. “The one that performed the album laid on the distortion, added even more echo and stretched the fifteen songs out to 90 minutes, exulting in false endings and exploding codas. Hallahan kept up a steady John Bonham-like earthquake under ‘Heartbreakin Man’; ‘Evelyn Is Not Real’ got a triple-guitar, Yardbirds-style makeover in the middle. “If All Else Fails’ was a tune never before performed in concert. Here, with James on acoustic guitar, his high croon thickened with reverb, it sounded like his first truly great song, with hook power and gritty dignity — a strong promise of future grandeur.”

My Morning Jacket – who furthered their ongoing artistic evolution with this summer’s arrival of their powerful new anthem, “Aren’t We One?” – wrapped a busy 2024 tour schedule earlier this month that saw headline shows, top-billed festival appearances, and a very special co-headline run with Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. In addition, the band recently announced the next edition of My Morning Jacket’s One Big Holiday, a three-night music vacation set for Miramar Beach, FL’s Seascape Resort on April 3-5, 2025. A complete lineup will be announced soon. Tickets are on sale now exclusively at topeka.live/onebigholiday25.

Allen Stone Announces New EP “Mystery” Out Oct. 25, Shares New Single “Mystery Ft. PJ Morton”

Today, Allen Stone announces his new EP Mystery set for digital release on October 25th, with a vinyl pressing to follow on November 8th, via ATO Records. Pre-order “Mystery” on Limited Edition Baby Blue vinyl or Clear vinyl HERE.

The EP’s title track is out now, featuring 5-time Grammy winner PJ Morton(Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5). The pairing is a match made in heaven, combiningStone’s signature smoothness with Morton’s soulful tones, making for a track that drips with emotional depth and pure musical chemistry. The musical bed was recorded with PJ Morton‘s band in Al Green’s studio in Memphis, TN. “It’s a true honor and milestone to have a song with PJ.” Allen shares “Not only one he produced but is a feature. He’s at the top of my list of artists whom I deeply respect in this music thing.”

The new single follows last month’s release of Can’t Explain This Love,” the single produced by Soulive’s Eric Krasno, which also features on the upcoming EP.

“Mystery” is a groovy and vibrant EP that is as much about mood as it is about message. From the moment the first beat drops, you’re hooked—drawn into an upbeat tempo that flows effortlessly across tracks, making it an undeniable groove fest. With smooth vocals that cut through like butter on tracks like “Memory of You” and “Sweet Little Rainbows,” Stone proves he hasn’t lost his touch in delivering that lush, silky sound fans crave.

Lyrically, the album takes you on a journey. Love, ego, heartache, and self-realization are all themes Allen Stone masterfully explores, offering a wide emotional spectrum. Tracks like “Already There” and “Ego-Motion“ showcase that growth in content, while also leaning into a soundscape that feels both familiar and refreshingly bold.

Sonically, Stone has taken a few risks, and they all work in his favor. The blend of smooth ballads, uptempo grooves, and explorative production will leave you raising your hands on tracks like “Already There” and dancing without a care on tracks like “Strong” and “Can’t Explain This Love”.

This EP is an exhilarating mix of the old and the new—smooth vocals, infectious rhythms, and an emotional journey that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Allen Stone is back, and he’s brought the funk and soul with him.

Allen Stone‘s journey to becoming a successful musician started in the small town of Chewelah, Washington, where he was raised on gospel music and spent much of his childhood as a pastor’s son, watching his parents lead their congregation in song. After dropping out of college, he made the move to Seattle to pursue his music career, often driving up and down the West Coast in his ’87 Buick to perform at any and all gigs he could find. Stone quickly gained a reputation for his powerful live performances, and over the years, he has played up to 200 dates per year, building a devoted following along the way. His unique ability to channel sensitivity into his songs while radiating hope and promise has endeared him to audiences worldwide.

Stone‘s ability to blend various genres, including soul-pop, folk-rock, R&B, and funk, is evident in his five full-length albums, from his 2010 self-released debut album “Last To Speak” to 2021’s “APART.” In addition to his successful touring schedule, Stone has also appeared on national television numerous times, including performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers, American Idol and The Today Show.

My Morning Jacket Unveil New Song “Aren’t We One?”

My Morning Jacket has announced today’s premiere of “Aren’t We One?” a powerful new anthem available now via ATO Records. Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam), the track was co-written by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Bo Koster with Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull.

LISTEN TO “AREN’T WE ONE?”

“Music is the invisible architecture holding up the entire universe,” says Jim James.. Music is the great reminder that life, despite its challenges, still brims with so much beauty. Music connects us back to the source — the heartbeat of existence, the force of love that binds us all, that boundless ocean of cosmic energy.

“In these times of great confusion and shifting energies, let us remember love, equality, and unity. Let us move past the divide and conquer mentality holding us back and come together to uplift one another and heal our planet. A rainbow is the greatest example we have of this in life, where all of the diverse colors come together to form something much greater than they ever could have done on their own. No matter what walk of life one may stroll- who doesn’t enjoy the majesty of a rainbow out in nature?! We are all part of that great ever-changing living rainbow called life.

Let us act with compassion and listen to the heartbeat of the universe, the voice of conscience within our souls, guiding us towards peace, reminding us that we are all one… all part of the same love.

“Please help support organizations like @doctorswithoutborders, @amnesty, @glbctzn, and others fighting for a better world.

“Most importantly, register to VOTE and exercise your right to choose. Your voice matters. Every vote counts. Don’t let your voice go unheard. In the upcoming election we believe in the leadership of @kamalaharris and @timwallz, who are working tirelessly to create a world of fairness, equality, and peace. Visit @headcountorg for information on registering to vote or voting in your area.”

Friko Releases “Get Numb To It!” Video

Chicago band Friko  — vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan and drummer Bailey Minzenberger — shares a new video for “Get Numb To It!,” a standout track from their 2024 breakout album Where we’ve been, Where we go from here, out now on ATO Records. Following a summer with performances at Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Fuji Rock, spring tours with Water From Your Eyes, WILLIS and Mind’s Eye, Friko begins a North American tour tonight supporting Royel Otis before their first European headline tour in November. The “Get Numb To It!” video, directed by Alec Basse, fittingly includes footage from the band’s recent performances and time on the road.

Where we’ve been, Where we go from here has catapulted Friko into the national spotlight, with glowing reviews from Pitchfork, SPIN, Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, Chicago Sun-Times, Paste, and more, along with placement on several “Best Of 2024” lists including Vulture/New York Magazine, NPR Music, A.V. Club, and Paste, who named “Where We’ve Been” as their #1 song of the year so far. The band has seen radio play on SiriusXMU, WXRT, KUTX, and more, and the album charted in the top 10 on the NACC TOP 200 College Radio chart.

Watch the Video For “Get Numb To It!”

An essential new addition to Chicago’s long lineage of forward-thinking indie rock, Friko transforms every song into a moment of collective catharsis. Known for their high-energy live show, Friko aims to deliver a live experience that’s fantastically disorienting in its emotional arc. Mastered by Heba Kadry (Björk, Big Thief) and engineered by Jack Henry and Scott Tallarida, Where we’ve been, Where we go from here embodies a sonic complexity befitting of a band that names Romantic-era classical music and the more primal edges of art-rock among their inspirations. Friko hopes that their music’s emotional potency might have a galvanizing impact on audiences.

The Heavy Heavy Release Debut Album ‘One Of A Kind’

Today, The Heavy Heavy, the UK-based band who have been hailed as “one of the most talented rock bands alive” (Paste), release their debut album, One of a Kind, via ATO Records. Inspired by a variety of iconic artists and genres, including the Rolling Stones, Motown, and 1990s Brit rock, One of a Kind weaves a dynamic tapestry of themes centered around empowerment, joy, and self-reflection. Stream One of a Kind HERE.

The Heavy Heavy are set to appear on CBS Saturday Morning next Saturday, September 14th. The appearance will include three electric performances of tracks off the album. The band has recently been featured in Paste (who also called the album “a phenomenal rock record”) HITS Magazine’s New & Developing Artists issue, and on The Record Store Day Podcast and Grammy.com’s Global Spin – you can watch their performance of “Happiness” HERE.

The album’s lead single, “Happiness,” recently reached No.1 at both AAA and Americana Radio. This is the band’s first-ever No.1 single, building on the Top 5 success of both “Miles and Miles” and “Go Down River” from their critically acclaimed breakout EP, Life and Life Only. In addition to “Happiness”, the new album tracklisting’s myriad high points include the majestic title track, the feel-good and carefree love song “Because You’re Mine,” the bass-driven and gorgeously hazy “Miracle Sun,” “Wild Emotion,” a country-infused serenade laced with galloping rhythms and twangy guitar tones, the experimental, and reverb-soaked closing track, “Salina.”

Written entirely by co-founders Georgie Fuller and Will Turner and mostly recorded at Turner’s studio in Brighton, One Of A Kind maintains the self-contained approach of their debut EP, Life and Life Only — a seven-song project acclaimed by outlets like NME (who named them an essential emerging artist for 2023), The Guardian (who called them “brilliant” and noted that The Heavy Heavy “write and play music with that lick of madness that makes early Fleetwood Mac and peak Stones so thrilling”), and FLOOD (who named them “one of the brightest new UK acts”). But in a departure from the EP, One Of A Kind leans away from Laurel Canyon-esque folk-rock and fully embraces their British roots, finding a particularly crucial inspiration in the gritty and groove-heavy hedonism of the Rolling Stones’ Goats Head Soup

Tickets are now on sale for The Heavy Heavy’s fall tour, which kicks off later this month. The tour will see the band perform at a number of iconic venues across the country, including DC’s Howard Theatre, The Blue Room in Nashville, The Mohawk in Austin, First Avenue in Minneapolis, and the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The tour will kick off on September 21st at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY and will conclude at Thalia Hall in Chicago on October 25th. Full routing below. Jem Celebrates Platinum Debut Album’s 20th Anniversary

Jem’s platinum debut, Finally Woken, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The album (with ubiquitous song ‘They’) has sold over a million copies worldwide, amassed millions of views on YouTube, and its songs have been featured in numerous films, trailers, TV shows and commercials including – Grey’s Anatomy, Orange Is the New Black, Sex and the City The Movie, Gossip Girl, The O.C., Desperate Housewives, Six Feet Under, Dancing With the Stars, Celebrity Love Island (the original theme song), and many more. To celebrate the double decade milestone, Jem will release the remastered album to all streaming platforms on Friday, August 23rd.

Today, Jem releases “They 2.0 (Jem’s Carnival Remix),” a summer carnival remix that harkens back to her DJ roots. “‘They’ is such a special song to me and I loved making this remix. I started out in the dance world as a club promoter and DJ so it’s great to go back to my roots. I wanted to give it a summer carnival vibe and went drum crazy in my studio!” says Jem. The remix comes accompanied by a “full circle” music video: “My kids are in the ‘They 2.0’ music video (and on the single cover), and I met my husband on the set of ‘Wish I’ (he played my love interest :), which was the original celebrity Love Island TV series theme song, now having a huge resurgence!”

Welsh-born Jem obtained a law degree while DJing and pioneering Brighton’s early Drum ’n’ Bass scene. Learning to navigate a bedroom-studio she ran a breakbeat record label before assisting at the acclaimed club night which launched the DJ career of Fatboy Slim.

Her earliest break came co-writing ‘Nothing Fails’ for Madonna’s American Life album. Later dropping her self-made demo at the door of KCRW, LA’s revered radio station, it quickly became the No.1 listener requested.

Jem’s played stadium shows supporting Dave Matthews Band and shared billing with Kanye, The Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, the Pixies, P!nk and Ray LaMontagne to name a few. Her music has been covered in Cantonese and Mandarin by Chinese actor & pop star Karen Mok, Taiwan’s acclaimed Jolin Tsai, and the Hong Kong Cantopop duo Twins.

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary, Jem is launching a new music-inspired podcast – ‘IT’S AMAZING’. A podcast celebrating the amazingness of music and the engaging, magical and sometimes crazy memories it inspires! Uplifting conversations and new music discovery, interviewing acclaimed artists and celebrity guests about the music that’s shaped them, especially at pivotal personal and career moments in their lives.

Also a writer, director and entrepreneur, Jem’s creating and producing film & TV projects and building 360 franchise IP across an array of industries.

Blind Pilot Triumphantly Re-Emerge With First Album In 8 Years

Blind Pilot have returned radically transformed and revitalized on their first release since 2016 – In The Shadow Of The Holy Mountain – giving hard-earned depth and perspective to the group’s “elegant, thoughtful reflections” (NPR Music). The eleven-song collection arrives August 16 via ATO Records, on the other side of a years-long journey for Blind Pilot’s Israel Nebeker – both geographically and spiritually – to reclaim his voice as a songwriter. “I was struggling with a lot of fear surrounding expectations of who I was supposed to be,” he confides, “I’d lost my path with music.”

Traveling to Scandinavia to reconnect with his family’s roots in the nomadic Sámi community, a drum ceremony led Nebeker to visions of his ancestors, and to the mountain where his creative rebirth began. From there, his return to songwriting was solidified when he and Blind Pilot co-founder Ryan Dobrowski were invited to perform in Mexico City by a humanitarian group helping migrants in the country. After speaking with them for hours, “I got the idea to write a song that looks at ideas of ownership and othering, and what it does when we tell people, ‘This is our home, not yours.'” After years of not writing so much as a single verse, In The Shadow Of The Holy Mountain flowed out of him in one month. Soon after, he found himself reuniting with Dobrowski, bassist Luke Ydstie and multi-instrumentalist Kati Claborn to begin work on Blind Pilot’s first new album in eight years in their  longtime homebase of Astoria, Oregon.

Listen to “Just A Bird” here, a song with carefree spirit that sharply contrasts the emotional complexity of its lyrical sentiment: https://atorecords-ffm.com/justabird

Teaming with producer Josh Kaufman (The National, The War On Drugs) at a 19th century church turned home studio in upstate New York, the recording sessions for In The Shadow Of The Holy Mountain were the most free-flowing of the band’s career, approaching perfection like “an overly Photoshopped picture of someone you love.” The final result was “the most joy we’d ever had in making an album together,” as Nebeker described it – which shines through palpably on a collection that’s equal parts celebration and revelation. “We’re still feeling that deep connection that’s been a throughline for our entire adult lives,” adds Dobrowski, who formed an early version of Blind Pilot with Nebeker nearly two decades ago as college students.

Much of the enrapturing energy pulsing through In The Shadow Of The Holy Mountain stems from Blind Pilot fully harnessing the chemistry of their live performances (“listening to each other and trusting our instincts”) – which has included tours with The Shins, Andrew Bird, and Gregory Alan Isakov along with major festival stages like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. This time around, they’ll tour North America deep into 2024 – beginning with a cross-country run of intimate shows this summer at venues like Los Angeles’ Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever and New York’s Sultan Room. They will debut new material from In The Shadow Of The Holy Mountain at these shows – celebrating Blind Pilot’s first album since And Then Like Lions in 2016, a collection they brought to CBS This Morning and NPR’s Tiny Desk alongside praise as “reminiscent of Lou Reed’s ‘Magic and Loss’ and Arcade Fire’s ‘Funeral,’ which are excellent company” (Wall Street Journal).

Deer Tick Announces New EP “Contractual Obligations”

Today, Deer Tick announced their new EP “Contractual Obligations,” 8 songs recorded during the sessions for their latest album ‘Emotional Contracts’, set for release July 12th, 2024 via ATO Records. “Sometimes when you make a record you have to make a few cuts. With 2023’s Emotional Contracts, we were quite happy with all the material that ended up on the cutting room floor. So we swept it all up and compiled it into this EP titled Contractual Obligations.” says singer/guitarist John McCauley, whose bandmates include guitarist Ian O’Neil, drummer Dennis Ryan, and bassist Christopher Ryan.

The Providence-bred four-piece spent months working on demos in a warehouse space in their hometown before heading into the studio with producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Spoon, Sleater-Kinney). “Contractual Obligations” – like ‘Emotional Contracts’ – fully echoes the unruly energy of its creation, ultimately making for a heavy-hearted yet wildly life-affirming portrait of growing older without losing heart. This new EP adds another notch to their belt of timeless rock-and-roll records. Pre-order the EP on “Ice Blue” vinyl 12” HERE.

Debuting with the announcement is the energetic new single “Sacrosanct,” “a song that we’ve cut and recut a few times over the years. We always felt like it was lacking something. Recording it with Dave Fridmann gave it the kick in the pants we all felt it needed.” recounts McCauley. You can listen to the single HERE and watch the lyric video HERE.

“Contractual Obligations” follows the critically acclaimed ‘Emotional Contracts’, which featured AAA radio top ten single “Forgiving Ties” and saw the band return to CBS Saturday Morning, as well as being named one of NY Mag/Vulture‘s Most Anticipated Summer Albums, and earning praises and support from NPR Music, MOJO (4/5 star), and more.

Founded by McCauley in 2004, with the lineup solidified in 2009, Deer Tick partly attribute their unfaltering chemistry to a shared sense of humor. But as a phenomenally rowdy live act who once averaged 250 shows a year, Deer Tick mainly credit their deep-rooted connection to a mutual love for the unpredictability of the musical impulse. “I feel very lucky that we all ran into each other at some point pretty early on in our lives,” says McCauley. “From the start, I just wanted to find other musicians that would somehow all stick together, which definitely isn’t easy. But we all have a real fascination with music, and that desire to never limit ourselves or repeat ourselves is something that we all very much continue to share.”

To celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary, Deer Tick will tour extensively through the Summer, Fall and Winter 2024, kicking off with three sold-out shows at Woodstock’s Levon Helm Studios for 4th for July.
